Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 14, 1966 Funeral Rite for Jacob Ils Is Wednesday Jacob Ils succumbed here Sunday at the age of 88. He had been a resident at Adams County Memorial hospital the past year, but made trips down town from time to time. He was born July 8, 1878, at Walter, Russia. He came to the United States 54 years ago and was a resident of Adams county ever since. He was a retired wheat farmer, having moved to Ritzville to live in 1937. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Joel (Molly) German, Mrs. John (Marie) Scrupps of Odessa, Mrs. Don (Lydia) Gettman of Odessa and Mrs. Lawrence (Alma) Benzel. Two sons survive, George Ils of Ritzville and Adams Ils of Seattle. There are four step children who survive. They are Mrs. Clara Lesser of Moses Lake, Mrs. Hanna Becker and Mrs. Anna Schafer of Medical Lake, and Miss Lucille Becker of Seattle. Mr. Ils' first wife died in 1934, his second wife in 1959. There are 17 grandchildren surviving and 19 great grandchildren. The Rev. Ernest Sprenger conducted the funeral service at the Philadelphia Congregational church Wednesday afternoon. A male quartet sang "God Never Forgets" and "Gute Nacht." Members were Jake and Carl Hoefel, Dan Roloff and Elmer Heimbigner. Miss Diane Roloff accompanied them at the organ. Pallbearers were Carl Ils, Tom German, Jack Scrupps, Lorus Scrupps, Danny Gettman and Bruce Benzel. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemtery. John Nelson Service Held Here Tuesday Funeral services for John Herbert Nelson of Lind were held at the chapel of the Danekas Funeral home Tuesday afternoon. He died Sunday at the Adams County Memorial hospital where he had been a patient for only one day. John Herbert Nelson was born July 23, 1906, at Mt. Vista, Colo. He had been a resident of the Lind community for the past 30 years. He was an employee of the Adams county road department. Surviving are his wife Mary, at home; a son John H. Nelson of Lind; and a step daughter Maxine Cook of Bellevue. There are also two grandchildren surviving. The Rev. Roy T. Johnson of Lind conducted the funeral. Sacred selections sung by Merrill Womach were "In The Garden" and "Whispering Hope." Pallbearers were Bernard Klemmer, Edwin Longmeier, Ruben Schoessler, Ronald Davison, John Kulm and DeWayne Klemmer. Honorary pallbearers were Roy Parrish, Floyd Thompson, Ted Klemmer, Albert Bruegeman, Claude Woodland and L. J. Maher. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 21, 1966 V. Schwisow Funeral Held Here Monday Funeral services for "Blatz" Schwisow were held Monday afternoon at Emanuel Lutheran church. He died very suddenly Thursday of last week while attending a meeting at Emanuel church of a committee to plan for a new parsonage. His death was the result of a heart attack. Vern Arthur Schwisow was born July 10, 1924, in Nebraska. He had lived in this community for 40 of his 42 years. He attended high school here and was a star athlete. For many years he played baseball with the Ritzville Ramblers. Only the Sunday before his death he played with the old-timers Ramblers team. He was for some time care taker for the Ritzville golf course and worked recently at the ranch of his uncle, Al Schweer. He was active in the Ritzville fire department as a fireman. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran church. During World War II Blatz served in the U. S. Navy from July 3, 1943, to April 19, 1946. Survivors include his wife Rosemary; two daughters, Susan and Sandra and a son Mike, all at home; his mother, Mrs. Agnes Schwisow, and a sister, Mrs. Lorraine Smith, both of Ritzville; and two brothers, Marvin of Ritzville and Danny of Kennewick. The Rev. Roy T. Johnson of Lind conducted the funeral service. Dr. Bruce Hille sang "Softly and Tenderly" and "Just As I Am." He was accompanied by Mrs. Orville Moeller. Pallbearers were Fred, Donald, Milton and Harry Schwisow, Milton Niederkleine and Ronald Koch. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 11, 1966 Funeral Rite for John Rehn Will Be Today Funeral services for John Rehn will be held at Philadelphia Congregational church at 2 o'clock today. He died Sunday at his home at 306 East Third avenue. John Rehn was born April 29, 1878, in Kolb, Russia. He was a retired farmer and had lived in Ritzville the past 28 years. He had lived in the United States for 64 years. He was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational church. He is survived by his wife Pauline and by three daughters. They are Mrs. John Lawson and Mrs. George Sheatsley, both of Tacoma; and Mrs. David Lloyd of Seattle. There are six sons who survive. They are John Rehn of Yakima, Henry Rehn at Carbonville, Ill., Alex Rehn and Harold Rehn of Los Angeles, Calif., Victor Rehn of Washtucna and Clarence Rehn of Kettle Falls. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. The Rev. Ernest Sprenger will conduct the service. A male quartet, Edwin and Dan Roloff, Elmer Heimbigner and Carl Hoefel, will sing. Rutz Funeral Held Here Saturday Mrs. Emily A. Rutz died Thursday at Adams County Memorial hospital after being confined there only four days. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Danekas Funeral chapel with the Rev. R. Clevenger officiating. Mrs. Rutz was born at Hatton, N. Dak., March 28, 1893, the daughter of Charles A. and Ida Menge Schelly. She came to Adams county as a child of eight. Her husband, Henry, died in 1949. She was a member of the Assembly of God church. Survivors included two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Marjorie) Allen, Spokane; and Miss Lois Rutz, Ritzville. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Louise Jones of Denton, N. Dak., A son, Vernon H., preceded his mother in death. Other survivors are three step sisters, Mrs. Luetta Thomas. Spokane; Mrs. Hilda Giles, LaJolla, Calif.; and Mrs. Helena Nelson, Beverly Hills, Calif. A half brother, Carl Schelly, lives at Pittsburg, Pa. A step brother, David Dirks of La Jolla, also survives. There are four grandchildren surviving. The Rev. R. R. Eylander read the obituary in the Saturday service. Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Nelson sang "Until Then" and "My Home Sweet Home." Ruth Nelson was their organ accompanist. Pallbearers were Ed Faure, jr., Lee Schelly, Richard Cooper, Gayle Gering, Donald Lust and Clifford Harthill. Honorary pallbearers were W. E. Scheel, Alfred Heinemann, Charles Baumann, Clifford Blasingame, Ed Tesch and W. J. Thomas. Burial was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Gray Memorial Rite to be Sunday WASHTUCNA - A memorial service for John S. Gray will be held at the Community church here during the opening portion of the regular church service at 11 a.m. Sunday. The Rev. Ralph Smith will conduct the service. Committal services were held Tuesday afternoon at Highland cemetery at Colville, with the Rev. Ralph Smith conducting them. He had died last week while on a fishing expedition to the mouth of the Columbia river, of a brain hemorrhage. His death was wholly unexpected, and Mr. Gray had undergone a complete physical examination only a few days earlier. He was 70 years of age. During the past year or so, he and Mrs. Gray had lived at Lake Oswego, a suburb of Portland, Ore. John S. Gray was born at Sprague. He was a prominent wheat and cattle rancher, having retired about three years ago. He and Mrs. Gray traveled and lived in Florida for a time before moving to Oregon. Besides his wife, Lillian V. Gray at home, the deceased is survived by three daughters and one son. The daughters are Katherine Miles of Olympia, Martha Morrison of Orlando, Fla., and Marjorie Hindman of Portland, Ore. The son is Walter J. Gray of Washtucna. Also surviving is a sister, Eva Russell of Lake Oswego, Ore.; a brother, Joe W. Gray of Seal Beach, Calif.; and 12 grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 8, 1966 Edw. Buscher Service Held Funeral services were held for Edward E. Buscher Sept. 1 in Seattle. The Rev. M. Donald Hinderlie of the First Lutheran church of Seattle officiated. Buscher formerly lived in Ritzville for many years. He is survived by his wife Muriel; a daughter Juanita of Kent; a son Gene of Selah; four sisters, Mrs. Karl VanBuren of Lewiston, Ida.; Mrs. J. V. Bates of Seattle; Mrs. Lester Luiten of Lamona; and Mrs. John Brandt of Douglas. Also surviving are two brothers, Henry of Kettle Falls and Fred of Ritzville. Funeral Held for Bert Koch on Tuesday Funeral services werd held Tuesday afternoon for Bert Koch at Danekas Funeral chapel. He died Friday at Adams County Memorial hospital. He had been there since the previous evening. A few days earlier Bert had come home after being in a Spokane hospital for two weeks. He had not enjoyed good health in the last six months. Berthold D. Koch was born in Ritzville August 25, 1915. He had been for many years an oil distributor and service station operator here. Weekends he served as an officer on the Ritzville police force. He was a member of Zion Congregational church. He is survived by his wife Hilda at home, 604 N. Chelan. A daughter Mrs. Richard (Judy) Maxwell lives at Hermiston, Ore. There are four sons, Duane, Wayne and Joey at home; and Jerry with the U.S. Navy at Newport, R.I. Also surviving are three brothers, Rudy and Rueben of Ritzville and Carl Walter of Hatton. There are five sisters, Mrs. Sara Charvat, Spokane; Mrs. Les (Olga) Maley, Thornton; Mrs. Robert (Dolly) Vanderford, San Francisco, Calif.; Mrs. Eugene (Garaldine) Hagadome, Yakima; and Mrs. Charles (Thelma) McCormick, Ritzville. Koch enlisted in the U. S. Marines on December 23, 1933, and served four years, being honorably discharged on Dec. 17, 1937. He served aboard the USS West Virginia from March 10, 1933, to June 17, 1936. The Rev. Beryl Melcher conducted the funeral service. Pallbearers were Winston Reimers, Roy Langenheder, Pete Greenwalt, Levein Schroeder, Harry Tompkins and Cliff Ahern. Honorary pallbearers were Jim Kadlec, Al Stallman, Cliff Graham and Clint Rowe. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Harry Snead Funeral Held on Tuesday Funeral services were conducted Tuesday from the Lind Methodist church for Harry S. Snead, 86, pioneer area resident. The Rev. Roger Johnson officiated. Snead died Thursday morning in a Moses Lake hospital. Born and educated at Oak Grove, Mo., he moved as a young man to Cunningham in 1901 where he owned and operated a mercantile store. In 1908 he moved to Lind where he and a group of men organized the First National Bank of Lind. He served as president and cashier of that institution until it was sold to Seattle-First National bank in 1948. He also founded the Snead Tractor and Implement company in Lind in 1920. He had been a member of the Baptist church. Survivors include his wife Irma, at the home; two sons, H. E. Snead of Moses Lake, and J. S. Snead of Lind. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. W. C. Farrell of Sioux Falls, S. D., and five grandchildren. Burial was in the Lind cemetery with Chapel of Memories, Moses Lake in charge. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 15, 1966 Funeral Rite of John Stehr Set Saturday Funeral services for John F. Stehr will be at 10 o'clock Saturday morning at the chapel of the Danekas Funeral home. He died at the age of 90 at the Adams County Memorial hospital Monday. John F. Stehr was born near Odessa, Russia, January 14, 1876. He was a resident of the United States for 88 years, and homesteaded in the Dakotas. In Adams county where he lived for the past 57 years he was well known for his skills on lawn seeding and landscaping. He is survived by his wife Katherine at the home at 406 South Jefferson; and two daughters, Mrs. Russel Eylander and Mrs. Le Martha Thorp of Port Angeles. There are also six sisters and three brothers surviving. The sisters are Mrs. Selma Palm Byjland, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Ann Nies and Mrs. Lena Meckler, Lodi, Calif.; Mrs. Bertha Graff, Walla Walla; Mrs. Hulda Peasley, North Bend, Ore.; and Mrs. Marie Shearer, Spokane. The brothers are Otto Stehr of Ritzville, Rynie Stehr of Usk and Gotthold Stehr of Kulm, N. Dak. three grandchildren also survive. Mr. Stehr was a member of the Assembly of God church. The Rev. Gordon Welk will conduct the funeral. Burial will be in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Mrs. Loveless Funeral Held at Washtucna WASHTUCNA - Funeral services for Helen Marie Loveless were held Monday at the Community church here. She died last Friday at Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane following severe illness. Mrs. Loveless was 32 years of age. She was born July 15, 1934, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Beckner of Washtucna. A graduate of Kahlotus high school, she attended Eastern Washington College of Education. She was married to Bill Loveless on December 27, 1956. The Rev. Ralph Smith conducted the funeral service. Interment was at Dessert Lawn Memorial cemetery at Kennewick. Mrs. Rod Kinch sang "The 23rd Psalm" and "Just As I Am." Her organ accompanist was Mrs. Elmer Lee. Pallbearers were David Braddock, Robert Bongers, Kenneth Cockrane, James Herron, Boyd Peterson and Keith Rice. Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Campbell, Roy Gillis, William Fisher, James Murphy, Roderick Ross, Ernie Stoess, Melvin Hollenback and Archie Staley. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 22, 1966 Mrs. Bauman Rites Today Funeral services for Clara A. Bauman will be held at the Hazen & Jaeger funeral home in Spokane this morning at 11 o'clock. Mrs. Bauman died in a Spokane hospital Sunday. She had lived in Adams county until seven years ago. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Peggy Ann Damon of Spokane and a son, Donald Douglas Bauman of Lind. There are seven grandchildren. A brother, Henry Amen of Ritzville, also survive. Alfred Wesley Bauman, husband of the deceased died a few years ago. Mrs. Bauman was 68 years of age. Interment will be in Fairmont Memorial Mausoleum at Spokane. Pallbearers will be Bill Wight, Roy Richelieu, Dick Larson, Howard Tustin, Charles Purcell and Wes Plager. Honorary pallbearers will be Gale Gfeller and Nick Seivers. Mrs. Ella Irby Dies in Oregon Word was received of the death of Mrs. Ella Irby who died Sunday at Astoria, Ore. She and her husband, the late Rasty Irby, owned and operated a restaurant and candy store in Ritzville many years ago, where Marshall-Wells is now located. She is survived by two sons, Gerald and Marvin, and one daughter, Maxine. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces, some of whom reside in the Ritzville area. Stehr Funeral Held Saturday Last rites for John F. Stehr were held at the Danekas Funeral chapel last Saturday morning. The Rev. Gordon Welk conducted the service. Milton Sackmann sang "The Lord's Prayer." Mrs. Orville Moeller was his organ accompanist. Pallbearers were Alvie Schrag, Ralph Gering, Joe Gering, Jess Graber, Dan Kembel and John Selcho. Honorary pallbearers were John C. Jantz, George Stumpf, Dr. Lloyd Haight, Clifford Blasingame, Frank Marshall, David Hoefel, Frank Dyck, Henry Gering and John Ott. Interment was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 29, 1966 Funeral Services for Henry Rehn Is Held Tuesday Funeral services for Henry J. Rehn were conducted Tuesday afternoon at Zion Congregational church. He died at Adams County Memorial hospital following a confinement there of 40 days. Henry J. Rehn was born October 22, 1898, in Nebraska, the son of George and Katherine Rehn. He was formerly an auto dealer here. Surviving are his wife Mona, at home, 105 East sixth; two sons, Glenn of Berea, Ohio, and Gordon of Ritzville; and a half sister, Leora Hoody, Los Angeles, Calif. There are also six grandchildren surviving. The Rev. Beryl Melcher conducted the funeral service. A duet, Alma Schafer and Lillian Miller, sang "In The Garden" and "Beyond The Sunset." Mrs. Orville Moeller was their organ accompanist. Pallbearers were Maynard Galbreath, Dan Kembel, Ralph Allert, Gene Weber, Rudy Rogel and Oscar Olson. Honorary pallbearers were George Freese, Walter Allert, Jay Salkield and A. E. Manke. Burial was in Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Funeral Service for Mrs. Hammond Being Held Today Funeral services for Margaret Hammond will be held at the Washtucna Community church at 2 o'clock today. She died Monday at Edmonds after a residence there of a year's time. She was born August 1, 1901, at Rochester, Minn., the daughter of Ralph Hurd and Emma Schmidt. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Frances Pierce of Seattle; and three sons, Ted Bostwick of Seattle, Sheldon Hammond of Washtucna and Don Hammond of Spokane. The Rev. J. Norvel Brown of the Seventh-day Adventist church here will conduct the service. Music will be by the Rev. Mr. Brown and Dorothy Fisher. Pallbearers will be Al Sitko, Tic Connell, Bill Fisher, Melvin Wachtel, Mel Hollenback and Duwayne Blankenship. Burial will be in the Washtucna cemetery. Mrs. Lathrop Laid to Rest Pearl Lathrop, long-time resident of the Benge community, died at Hillcrest manor here Saturday. She was born October 17, 1891, in Idaho, the daughter of John S. Gibson and Martha Day. Surviving are a son, Cecil Lathrop of Condon, Ore., and a sister, Mrs. Lillie Axel of Spokane. There are also four grandchildren. She was a member of the Grange at Benge, and also of the Methodist church. She had been a resident of the rest home for about five months. The Rev. James Updike of Trinity Methodist church conducted graveside services at Ritzville Memorial cemetery at 10 o'clock Monday morning. A group of Benge friends witnessed the final rites.
