The first took place December 30 and brought the 1966 fatality total for the county to 18, the highest in recent years. The second fatality occurred in the early-morning hours as the New Year dawned. It produced the first fatality to be recorded in 1967 in the State of Washington. Carl V. Dishman, 55, was killed Friday afternoon when his 1955 coach failed to negotiate a curve on the Barnes road in the Benge area. The car was going north entering the curve to the left when it went onto the right shoulder, veered into the left lane, went into a broadside slide on the right shoulder and came to rest in the right ditch. Dishman had been thrown from the vehicle. His body was met by a staff physician at Adams County Memorial hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The doctor did not ascertain cause of death and ordered an autopsy which determined Dishman died of a broken neck. Donald G. Carlock, 32, Lind, was killed when his 1964 hardtop failed to negotiate a curve about 2-1/2 miles south of Ritzville on highway 395. State Patrol officers said the car made a long swerve to the left, hit the left shoulder broadside, rolled at least twice, and came to rest on Carlock's body after he had been thrown out. His body was met by an Adams County Memorial hospital staff physician at Danekas Funeral home who pronounced him dead. A later autopsy showed the cause as pulmonary edema. Commenting on the accident, Sgt. Allan Little of the Washington State patrol, said seat belts, properly used, would have prevented both deaths. Trooper Fred Young investigated the Dishman accident and trooper Jim Davison was at the scene of the Carlock accident.
