Weller, died at a hospital in Walla Walla last Wednesday. She was 85 years old. She and her husband, Will, moved to the Ralston community in 1917 and built a home there. Both Mr. and Mrs. Weller were charter members of the Ralston Grange and Mrs. Weller was elected the first "master." While in Ralston they were members of St. Mark's Episcopal church and Mrs. Weller worked in St. Mark's guild. Mrs. Weller was born on May 29, 1883, at Spring Valley. In 1910 she married William Weller. They farmed north of Waitsburg and later at Ralston until his death in 1931. Mrs. Weller then went to Walla Walla. At the time of her death she was a 50-year member of the Waitsburg chaper of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Nile of Spokane. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Emory (Augusta) McCows, of Waitsburg and Mrs. Mary Kibler of Walla Walla. A brother, John Clodius, also lives at Walla Walla. Other survivors include numerous nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 11, 1968 Joel German Funeral Services Held Saturday from Chapel Funeral services for Joel Henry German were held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the chapel of the Danekas Funeral home with the Rev. Ernest Sprenger officiating. The 64-year-old retired wheat farmer had been ill for some time. He was born in Ritzville on November 13, 1903, and died at his home here on July 3. He is survived by his wife, Mollie, and by a daughter and a son. The daughter is Mrs. Robert (Lois) Phillips of Lind, and the son is Tom German of Ritzville. Other survivors include three brothers, Harold of Bremerton, Gilbert of Quincy, and Robert of Seattle. German had six grandchildren. He was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational church, of the IOOF lodge in Ritzville, of Marcellus Grange and of the Ritzville Gun club. Pallbearers at the funeral were Bruce Benzel, Brian Benzel, Louis Scrupps, Richard German, Carl Ils and Danny Gettman. Burial was at the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Funeral Services Friday at 10 for John N. Ott Who Died July 9 John N. Ott, 80, passed away Tuesday morning at 7:30 at the Ritzville Memorial hospital after an illness of five weeks. He was the son of Sebastian and Christina Hege Ott. He was born May 19, 1888, in Epstein, Germany. In 1896 he came with his parents and brothers and sisters to Ritzville where he has lived ever since. Mr. Ott's father built and operated the Ritzville Hotel which remained in the family until two years ago. His father and uncle purchased the Ritzville Flouring Mill at the turn of the century and the family remained interested in its operation even after controlling interest was purchased by the Centennial Milling Company. After graduation from Gonzaga university, he served as bookkeeper for the mill and manager of the hotel. He also was assistant manager of the Ritzville Trading company for many years. From 1932 until his retirement in 1949 he ran the Ott Chevrolet Motor company. He served for 32 years on the board of directors of the Washington division of the American Automobile Association. A civic leader, he was a past president of the Ritzville Chamber of Commerce in addition to serving on many committees which laid the ground work for city improvement which are now part of the town. He was an active member of Emanuel Lutheran church. He served his country in World War I and was a member of the C. J. Newland Post of the American Legion. His fraternal affiliations include being a past master of Ritzville Lodge No. 101 F and AM, past patron of Zenith chapter No. 55 order of Eastern Star, El Katif Shrine, and he was a charter member of the Sage Shrine club. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, at the home, whom he married August 8, 1920. Three daughters were born to this union, Shirley, Mrs. Edwin Kiehn of Pullman; Ardy, Mrs. Harry Golden, who was killed in an air accident in 1961, and Jeanette, Mrs. Frank Burford, of Bainbridge Island. Seven grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Elise Wollenberg of Ritzville; and one brother, Judge Richard B. Ott of Olympia, as well as many nieces and nephews also survive. The family suggests memorials may be made to Emanuel Lutheran church building fund or the Masonic building fund. Funeral services will be Friday, July 12, at 10 a.m. from Emanuel Lutheran church, with the Rev. Floyd Yokers, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Ritzville Memorial cemetery with Danekas Funeral home in charge. Gordon Swyter will provide musical selections, accompanied by Mrs. Orville Moeller. Pallbearers will be Willard Hennings, Richard Kembel, Carl W. Eckhardt, Walter Ott, William Rosenoff and David Hoefel. Honorary pallbearers will be Herb Beckley, Walter Johnson, Ken Killingsworth, Lee E. Burroughs, Edward G. Cross, Walter Nissen, William Thiel, Wally Proctor, Robert Newland, Ted Ott, John U. Pavlik, Calvin Moesle, Maynard Galbreath and Everett Kiehn. Members of Ritzville's Masonic lodge are planning to attend in a group. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 18, 1968 Minister Leaves to Attend Rites for His Mother The Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Castle left Ritzville Sunday afternoon for Sacramento, Calif., where they will attend the funeral service of Mrs. Lina Castle, 89-year-old mother of the Ritzville minister. She passed away Friday morning after an illness of a few weeks. Besides the son, Joe, eldest of 11 children born to Lina and William Castle near Britton, S. Dak., there are six other sons and two daughters surviving. A son and a daughter and her husband had been deceased earlier. The Rev. and Mrs. Castle, who would have left on their vacation from Trinity United Methodist church this week, will spend several days in California and Seattle before returning August 1. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, July 25, 1968 Larry Maier Funeral Held Here Monday Funeral services were conducted for Lawrence R. Maier Monday at Emanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. Floyd Yokers officiating. Larry Maier was 50 years old at the time of his death Thursday at his home. He had suffered a heart attack. He was employed by the Adams county engineer's office since 1950. For the first ten years he worked as a surveyor for the engineer in the field. For the last eight or so years he had week working as a bookkeeper accountant. Offices in the courthouse were closed for a time Monday in his memory. Maier was born in Ritzville on May 4, 1918. He attended school here. His survivors include his wife, Marjorie, and two sons, Douglas Lawrence and Craig Robert, at the home. Other survivors are his mother, Mrs. Dora Maier of Ritzville; a sister Mrs. Ira Dark of Lacrosse, and two brothers, Alvin Maier of Ritzville and Vernon Maier of Lacrosse. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran church. Pallbearers at the funeral were Harold Pfann, Earl Luiten, Jim Meyer, Virgil Hein, Paul Meyer and Danny Kutschkau. The honorary pallbearers were Roger Hart, John Rowe, Carl Hoffman, Dick Kavanagh, Roy Klein, Tony Eichner, Marvin Collier, Clint Rowe and Henry Leisle. Other honorary pallbearers were Robert Leach, Winston Reimers, Everett Kiehn, Bernard Klemmer, Lee Burroughs, Henry Franz, Carl Heinemann, Calvin Miller and Kenneth Foulkes. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery. Funeral Services for Paul Schwerin Held Last Monday Funeral services were held July 15 in Colville for Paul A. Schwerin who died July 12 after a lingering illness. He was one of twin sons born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schwerin in Ritzville June 16, 1893. In 1917 he was married to Irma Hallet who survives him as do a daughter, Mrs. Rex (Pauline) Clark, and two sons, Gordon and Grover, all of Kettle Falls. There are six grandchildren and a brother, Charles Schwerin of Walla Walla. He served in WWI and was a member of the American Legion. After the war he farmed in the Ritzville area and later moved to Kettle Falls. Interment was at Kettle Falls. Attending from Ritzville were Mr. and Mrs. Dick Stockman and Jacob Eckhardt. Former Ritzville residents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schwerin of Walla Walla also attended. Don Damon Funeral Held on Wednesday CUNNINGHAM - Funeral services were held Wednesday for one of Cunningham's well known citizens, Donald Damon, a pioneer wheat farmer, who was one of the main leaders in the development of the Columbia Basin project. Dr. Alfred Carter officiated at the services held at the Smith Funeral home in Spokane. Interment followed at Riverside Memorial Park. Damon, 60, died at the Kadlec Methodist hospital in Richland July 20. Mueller Funeral home at Kennewick had charge of the local arrangements. Donald Damon was born December 19, 1907, at Cunningham. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Damon. Damon was instrumental in the development of the Columbia Basin. He was one of the founders of the Columbia Basin Land owners association which was organized in the early 1930s. The group was organized to determine the financial and agriculture needs of the people who would be affected by the irrigation waters of the Columbia river after the construction of Grand Coulee dam. He was an original board member of the East Columbia Irrigation Bureau, was president of the board of commissioners of the Bureau of Reclamation Commissions for several years, and a commissioner on the Board of Commissions for over 25 years until he resigned about three years ago after suffering a stroke. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Damon at the home; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Ross Brown of Cunningham; two grandchildren, Keith and Heather Brown of Cunningham; five sisters, Mrs. Bert (Freda) Smith of Kennewick; Mrs. Marian Berland of Edmonds; Mrs. Lee (Agnes) Brickey of Burbank Heights, Pasco; Mrs. Art (Helen) Meilke of Lind; and Mrs. Melvin (Pat) Butterfield of Spokane; two brothers, Jack Damon of Lind and Mike Damon of Othello, and several nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers were John Damon, Royce Schuler, Tom Brickey, Peter Meilke, Colin McKinnon and Don Adkins, jr. Former City Lady Buried In Oregon Last Wednesday Burial services were held in Portland, Ore., last Wedneday for Mrs. Marguerite C. Midford, 66, who died July 5 in Baker, Ore. Mrs. Midford was born in Ritzville and had lived in the Portland area for more than 40 years, prior to going to Baker to live with a daughter about three months ago. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. H. B. Johnson, Baker, and Miss Dagmar M. Midford, Portland; a brother, Eugene E. Cassaday of Spokane, and five grandchildren. Her husband, Dr. George F. Midford, died in 1927. Cassaday was with Modern Hardware here from 1910 to 1919. Rosary services and requiem mass took place at St. Francis Cathedral in Baker earlier last week. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 1, 1968 Mowat Rites Held Tuesday in Spokane Funeral services for Millard Mowat of Lind were held Tuesday from the Smith Funeral home in Spokane. The Rev. Robert Morton officiated. Mowat died in a Spokane hospital Friday. He was 63 years old, having been born June 13, 1905. For the past many years he had been a barber in Lind. He is survived by his wife, Helen, at the home, a brother, Eugene Mowat of Spokane, a nephew and a niece as well as aunts and uncles. He was a member of the Lind Methodist church and the IOOF lodge of Lind. Soloist Phil Crosby sang "Whispering Hope," and "The Old Rugged Cross." His organist was Margaret Harvey. Pallbearers included Kenneth Williams, Doug Urquhart, Keith Weston, Kenneth McKeehan, Albert Gross and Irvin Swarts. Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Terrace, Spokane. Paul Wable Dies in 60-Foot Fall Paul Wable fell to his death in St. Maries, W. Va., Monday. Mrs. Wable telephoned friends in Ritzville saying that he was working some 60 feet in the air when he slipped and fell. Monday was to have been the last day on that particular project. Funeral services were to be held today (Thursday) from the Ogdin Funeral home in Parkersburg, W. Va. Mr. and Mrs. Wable are former residents of Ritzville. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 8, 1968 Pioneer City Lady Is Dead, Funeral Today Funeral services for Mrs. B. F. (Maude Pearl) Collier, 79, pioneer resident of the Colfax area will be held from the Colfax Baptist church Thursday, Aug. 8, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. J. E. H. Nelson and the Rev. John R. Branden officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel cemetery at Steptoe. Born at Ritzville, she spent her early life in that area. She was married to Benjamin Franklin Collier December 23, 1909, at Ritzville. They moved to the Colfax area about 45 years ago and have farmed in various places in Whitman county. She died in Colfax August 5. Survivors include her husband, B. F. Collier at the home, Route 2, Garfield; four daughters, Mrs. Charles (Pearl) Wheaton, Moscow, Ida.; Mrs. Marion Ross, Moscow, Ida.; Mrs. Robert (Betty) Suess, Steptoe, and Mrs. Beverly Luft, Grandview; six sons, Richard Collier, Pomeroy, Claude Collier, Spokane, James Collier, Colfax, Donald Collier, Oakland, Calif., David Collier, Lynnwood, and Raymond Collier, Renton. There are 36 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Templin Rites Set Saturday at Emanuel Funeral services for Elsie Meta Templin who died Monday at Deaconess hospital in Spokane have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Emanuel Lutheran church in Ritzville. Mrs. Templin was 69 years old at the time of her death. She was born in Marienfelde, Germany, on August 16, 1898. She was the daughter of Gustav and Pauline Wellsandt and came with her family to the United States when she was seven years old. She married Ernest Templin on December 31, 1918, at Emanuel Lutheran church with the Rev. Just performing the ceremony. Mrs. Templin's survivors include her husband and three sons, Chester and Delbert of Ritzville and Robert of Coeur d'Alene, Ida. Others are Mrs. Meta Wilbur of Washougal, who is a sister, and Otto Wellsandt of Plummer, Ida., who is a brother. She had nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran church and was a past president of the Ritzville Business and Professional Women. The Rev. Floyd Yokers is to officiate at the funeral service. Burial will be at the Lutheran cemetery. The list of pallbearers had not been compiled when the paper went to press. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 15, 1968 Mrs. Herron Rites Monday in Pullman HATTON - Funeral services were conducted for Lois Herron Monday at Kimball's Funeral home in Pullman with Elder Craig S. Willis officiating. Mrs. Herron was 91 years old at the time of her death Thursday at the Ritzville Memorial hospital. She was born to James G. and Rebecca Smith at Blandenville, Ill., on February 1, 1877. She came with her parents to Cheney at the age of eight. In 1894 she married Charles W. Herron and in 1902 they moved to Adams county where they homesteaded. They farmed near Kahlotus and Hatton (on the old John Goodenough place where the Robert Bernard family resides) until 1926 when they moved to Pullman. Her husband died February 11, 1945, and Mrs. Herron continued to live in Pullman until 1956 when she moved to Kahlotus. She was a member of the Adams County Historical society, and was a charter member of the Pullman Seventh-day Adventist church and served as their secretary for several years. Mrs. Herron is survived by five sons, Oren G. and James J. Herron, both of Kahlotus; Orville L. Herron of Cutbank, Mont.; C. Benjamin Herron of Sidney, Mont.; and Robert R. Herron of Spokane; three daughters, Mrs. Harry (Agnita) Robinson of Bend, Ore.; Mrs. Colin (Lelia) Chester of Soda Springs, Ida.; and Mrs. Edwin (Lore) Raymond of Yakima; 17 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers, grandsons of the deceased, were Robert Herron, Kent Herron, Jack Herron, Dennis Herron, James Herron and Clark Herron. Concluding services were beside her husband at the Pullman cemetery. Attending from Michigan Prairie were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ashcraft and Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Curry, accompanied by John Shimek of Lind. Sophie Kramer Funeral Held in Grandview GRANDVIEW - Funeral services were held August 7 here for Mrs. Sophie Kramer, 67, who died August 3 in a Prosser hospital. The Rev. Wayne Barker of the Assembly of God church officiated at the Smith Funeral home with burial in the Sunnyside cemetery beside her late husband Albert Kramer. Mrs. Kramer was born and reared in Ritzville. In 1933 she was married to Arthur Kramer and lived at Spokane and White Bluffs before moving to a farm near Sunnyside. In 1938 they moved to a farm in the Belma district near Mabton where she continued to live following the death of her husband in 1944. She was a member of the Lutheran church. Survivors include a son Henry Kramer, Grandview; a brother Fred Weber, Ritzville; a sister, Mrs. Hannah Gale, Hubbard, Ore., and four grandchildren. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 22, 1968 Funeral Rites Held for Mary Shepley Mary Shepley, 74, was buried August 13 at the Ft. Rosecrans National cemetery in LaJolla, Calif. Funeral services for the former Ritzville lady were conducted at the LaJolla Methodist church. She was the widow of the late Eugene F. Shepley (of Myers-Shepley store in Ritzville) who died in 1965. She leaves a son, Russell, of San Diego, Calif., and a daughter. There are seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Shepley was a past Washington department president of the American Legion. Mrs. Oestreich's Rites Set Today Mrs. May Oestreich died Monday at Deaconess hospital in Spokane after extensive surgery, performed recently. Mrs. Oestreich who was born July 6, 1899, was survived by her husband, Ben Oestreich; her daughter, Pearl Jensen of Ephrata; her son, Robert O. Woods of Spokane; her sister, Mrs. Pearl Houge of Ohio; her brother, Fain Heiller of Seattle, and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Oestreich's funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Danekas Funeral chapel. Services will be conducted by the Reverend Ernest Sprenger. Cremation will follow the service. Mother, Son Meet Death on Hilltop Mrs. Nick Seivers, jr., 35, died instantly and her son, Nicholas Edward, 17, was fatally injured in a car-pickup smash atop a hill near their farm south of Lind Saturday morning about 11:30. Mrs. Seivers, driving the family station wagon, apparently was taking a coat to her son who was working in a field. A slight drizzle was falling. Her son, Nick, was on his way home, in a pickup, presumably to procure the jacket. When Mrs. Seivers failed to return home, another son, James, 15, went in search, discovered the accident and returned for his father. A younger son, David, 3, was in the station wagon with his mother. Seivers notified authorities. The vehicles met atop a hill 8.4 miles south of Lind on the Providence road. The impact demolished both vehicles as they met almost head-on. Trooper Lloyd Danielson of the state patrol said Mrs. Seivers was dead-on-arrival at Ritzville Memorial hospital. David was treated and transferred to Spokane as was Nicholas Edward who was pronounced dead-on-arrival at Deaconess hospital. David was expected to be released today (Thursday), after treatment for a slight concussion and possible internal injuries. Prayers for the dead were recited for the mother and her son in St. Agnes Catholic church in Ritzville Tuesday evening and a requiem mass was said at St. Ambrose Catholic church in Lind Wednesday afternoon. The Reverend Father James E. Grant, pastor, and Walter F. Abel, a former pastor officiated. Mrs. Seivers was born Patty Ann Bierman to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bierman November 3, 1932. Nicholas Edward Seivers was born July 17, 1951. Survivors include Nick Seivers, jr., of Lind, husband and father, and James and David, sons and brothers. Also surviving are Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bierman of Ritzville, grandparents, an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Bierman of Ritzville, and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Nick Seivers, sr., of Lind. Mrs. Seivers is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Don Baumann of Lind, Mrs. Dorothy Robinson of Goldendale and Mrs. Virginia Bates of Forest Grove, Ore., and a brother, John Clark of San Diego, Calif. Pallbearers for Mrs. Seivers included Al Strohmaier, Don Miller, Ron Pouley, Robert Oestreich, Gale Gfeller and Ruben Knodel. Jack Shimek acted as honorary pallbearer. Pallbearers for Nicholas Edward Seivers were John Shimek, Mike Fode, Larry Bauman, Darrel Kulm, John Franz and Fred Kulm. Honorary pallbearers were Sid Sackmann, Greg Strohmaier and Steve Pouley. Concluding services were conducted at the Lind cemetery with the Danekas Funeral home in charge. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, August 29, 1968 No obituaries were printed this week. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, September 5, 1968 Howard Kite, 65, Washtucna, Dead of Gun Wound in Head County coroner Philip Borst reported that sometime late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, Howard Kite, a 65-year-old Washtucna city employee apparently committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a .45 caliber automatic handgun. Deputy sheriff Marvin Collier said he received a call at 2:30 a.m. Sunday from Washtucna deputy Melvin Oquist who found Kite's body in back of the Washtucna city hall. Collier notified Borst who went to the death scene to determine whether foul play entered into the death. Borst said that "there was no footprints surrounding the body," which, he said, indicated that Kite was alone when he died. He said that there will be no inquest. Oquist said that he was summoned by Mrs. Kite sometime after 11:30 p.m. Saturday. She told the deputy that her husband had left the house earlier that night in a despondent mood. She became worried when he did not return, and called Oquist to help her locate her husband. Kite was born in Craig, Mo., and had been a member of the Washtucna community "for a number of years," according to Clint Rowe, Adams county sheriff. He is survived by his wife, Lena Mae; his two daughters, Mrs. Sara Goude, of Hooper, and Mrs. Joyce Lasen of Lamont; his two sons, Kenneth Kite of Washtucna, and Howard R. Kite of Walla Walla. He is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Edna Prawl of St. Joseph, Mo.; his brother, Wilbur Kite of Clarinda, Ia., and 11 grandchildren. His funeral was held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the chapel of the Danekas Funeral home. The Rev. Albert Wagner of Walla Walla officiated at the ceremony. He was interred at the Washtucna cemetery. Pallbearers were Alvin Hille, Nick Kutas, Syd Sullivan, Jim Woodyard, Jerry Moran and Maurice Meline. Honorary pallbearers were Lloyd Connell, Tom Meise, Tom Hayes, George Braman, Bob Hamill, Les Lane, Delmer Goude, D. I. Barry, Jim Bachman, Eugene Hille and C. E. (Tic) Connell. Nealey Funeral Held on Friday HATTON - Funeral services for Duran Nealey of Palmdale, Calif., formerly of Ritzville, were held Friday from Riplinger Funeral home in Spokane. Interment was at the Spokane Memorial Gardens. Attending from the Sandhills area were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lamson, Mrs. Zelma Williams, also Dr. and Mrs. Lee B. Williams from Pocima, Calif. While Dr. Williams and family were here for her father's funeral they were houseguests of his mother, Mrs. Zelma Williams. Rickmans at Funeral of Mother, Tuesday CUNNINGHAM - Mr. and Mrs. Louis Rickman and family left Monday for Bellingham to attend the funeral service for her mother, Mrs. Theo J. Bergman, on Tuesday. Mrs. Bergman, 83, had been ill a longtime and Mrs. Rickman was called to Bellingham when she had a severe stroke Thursday. She never regained consciousness. Mrs. Rickman remained in Bellingham after the services for a few days with her father and other relatives. C. Englehart Buried in Lind on Wednesday Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Lind Methodist church for Chris Englehart who died in a truck accident August 30 on a Franklin county rural road. The 66-year-old man was nearly a lifetime Lind resident and worked there as a construction laborer. He was born June 20, 1902, in Warden. He is survived by his wife Lena; his three sons, Richard of Pasco, Robert and Walter Englehart, both of Washtucna; his sister, Mrs. Emma Mayfield of Moses Lake; his four brothers, William of Moses Lake, Rhiney of Lind, Rudolph of Pasco, and David Englehart of Salem, Ore., and his three grandchildren. He was a member of the Baptist church and the Lind Grange. The Rev. Roger Johnson officiated at the ceremony. Englehart was interred at the Lind cemetery.
