Bruce Christian, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Christian of Snohomish, was the victim of a rocket explosion. He had been in Vietnam for eight months. The 21-year-old combat engineer had received the Air Medal, V for valor and a commendation for action under enemy fire. He will receive the Purple Heart posthumously and has been recommended by his commanding officer for the Bronze Star. He had been active in Boy Scout work and was an Eagle Scout. Survivors include his parents, a brother and a sister and a grandmother and a grandfather. He and his family had been frequent visitors at the homes of Mrs. Baker and Moesle. Funeral servivces were held September 21 at Christ the King Lutheran church in Snohomish. Mrs. Caroline Weber Dead at 91; Funeral Rites Held on Monday Funeral services were held Monday at the Philadelphia Congregational church for Mrs. Caroline Weber who died September 26 at the age of 91. Mrs. Weber was born to John and Elizabeth Handel (nee Englehardt) on September 14, 1877, on a farm at Menno, S. Dak. She was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Reformed tradition. She was married in 1896 to Ernest Hoppe. Of the four children born to this union one survives her mother. Due to a heart condition the family gave up farming in South Dakota and moved west settling in Quincy. There, in the same year, Mr. Hoppe died. In 1906 Caroline married Adam Weber, a widower with 11 children. Four children were born to the couple. After farming together the family retired in 1915 and, after moving about for some time, settled in Ritzville in the early 1950s. On September 28, 1960, Adam Weber died at 92 years. Mrs. Weber remained here and spent her last year at Hillcrest Manor. She is survived by seven sons, Henry Weber of Wenatchee; Dave Weber of Odessa; George Weber of Seattle; Sam Weber of Ontario, Ore., and John, Dan and Harold Weber of Ritzville; five daughters, Mrs. Lena Reiman of Dryden; Mrs. Edith Farris of Everett; Mrs. Elsie Castor of San Diego, Calif.; Mrs. Martha Williams of Odessa, and Mrs. Lydia Heimbigner; a sister, Mrs. Martha Guenthner, Berkeley, Calif.; 73 grandchildren, 167 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great- grandchildren. The Rev. Ernest Sprenger officiated at the funeral services. Burial was in the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Pallbearers were Mrs. Weber's grandsons. In charge of arrangements were the Strate Funeral home of Davenport, assisted by the Danekas Funeral home. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 10, 1968 Howton Funeral Held October 3 HATTON - Funeral services for Mrs. Lloyd Howton of Hermiston, Ore., were conducted from the United Methodist church in Hermiston, Thursday, October 3, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. V. Leon Bolen officiating. Interment was in the Hermiston cemetery. Wilma E. Campbell was born August 23, 1913, at Pilot Rock, Ore., to the late Mr. and Mrs. George Campbell. She was a very small girl when her parents located on Michigan Prairie, purchasing the old Dr. Levi Sutton place. She attended the "one room" country school on Michigan Prairie, later going to school in Connell and graduating from high school there. Miss Campbell was united in marriage to Lloyd L. Howton on November 23, 1933, at the home of her parents on Michigan Prairie. The couple lived in, and rural, Connell for 13 years, then moved to Oregon, where they farmed near Lexington before locating near Ione where they farmed until moving to Hermiston nine years ago. Mrs. Howton was a member of the Methodist church, an active member of the Women's Society of Christian Service, serving as its president last year, and a member of the Grange at Ione, Ore. Survivors include her husband, Lloyd, at the home; two sons, John Howton of LaGrande, Ore., and James Howton of Moscow, Ida.; four daughters, Mrs. Robert (Janet) Brindle of Pendleton, Ore., Mrs. Keith (Judy) Rea of Ione, Ore., Jackie and Joyce Howton at the home; four brothers, Glenn Campbell of Echo, Ore., Claude Campbell of Warden, Clifford Campbell of Everett and John Campbell of Connell; six grandchildren, numerous other relatives and a host of friends. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, October 24, 1968 Funeral Services Set in Ritzville for Alex Gust Funeral services are scheduled for Alex Gust of Washtucna at the Danekas Funeral chapel Friday at 2 p.m. Gust was 61. He is survived by his two sisters, Mrs. Emma Carpenter of Seattle and Mrs. Ruth Palmer of Spokane. The service will be conducted by Rev. Ernest Sprenger of the Philadelphia Congregational church. Kenneth Gust, a nephew of the deceased, said that the hymn "In The Garden" will be played at the services. Soloist at the services will be Lester Snyder of Washtucna. Nora Hale Wright Funeral Service Held Wednesday Services for Nora Hale Wright of Lind were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Lind from the Methodist church. Miss Wright is survived by her sister, Mrs. Lottie Jean Franzen of Menlo Park, Calif., and her two brothers, R. Homer Wright of Berkeley, Calif., and P. W. Wright of Lind. Miss Wright died in her Lind home Saturday. She was born on February 7, 1877, and died October 19, 1968. She was interred at the Mountain View cemetery in Walla Walla. Reverend Roger Johnson officiated at the ceremony. Pallbearers were Richard Kelsey, William Curry, Jack Williams, Kenneth Foulkes, Loren Woody and Leonard Jansen. Mrs. Ruth Franz played the sacred music at the services. Funeral Held for Mrs. Kiehn in Cashmere Funeral services were held Saturday morning, October 19, in the Lutheran church of Cashmere for Mrs. J. H. (Katherine) Kiehn who died last Thursday at the Cashmere Memorial rest home. Katherine Kiehn was born December 1, 1879, in Frank, Russia. At the age of four she came to America with her parents, John and Mary Kamerzell. She was married in 1897 to J. H. Kiehn and they homesteaded on a farm 12 miles north of Ritzville. In 1919 they moved to Cashmere and operated an apple orchard until 1945 when they retired and moved into Cashmere. Kiehn died in December, 1957, at the age of 85 years. Mrs. Kiehn lived in the Cashmere Memorial rest home the past four years. Mrs. Kiehn is survived by five sons, Carl of Ritzville, Dave of Peshastin, Art and Bill of Dryden and Dan of Waukon; two daughters, Mrs. Hilda Wacker of Odessa and Mrs. Esther Coates of Cashmere; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were grandsons, Earl, Bill and Herb, sons of Dave Kiehn, and Marvin, Melvin and Jerry, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kiehn. The Rev. Johnson officiated at the service. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 14, 1968 Ritzville Youth is Killed In Lind Car-Train Crash Chester Joseph Van Vleet was killed last Thursday morning at 7, when his car was struck by a Milwaukee road freight train traveling through the Nielson avenue crossing in Lind. Jacob Braziel, sr., of Ritzville saw the accident and said that Van Vleet was struck after he slowed down in approaching the crossing. He said at the last minute Van Vleet tried to beat the train across the tracks. According to Braziel, he had seen this deadly race Van Vleet ran repreated many times. Van Vleet's 1965 car was struck on the passenger's side and hooked on to the cow catcher of the lead engine of the train. The car was dragged for 3211 feet before the train stopped. Van Vleet was thrown out of the car soon after being hit and was run over by his own vehicle and the train. Parts of his body were scattered over a half mile area. Engineer of the 58 car train, Richard Liberty, said he blew the train's whistle giving the car plenty of warning. State patrol Sergeant Austin Jerpe investigated the crossing and said Van Vleet had a good view of the oncoming train. He estimated that the train could be seen plainly for about a half mile before it reached the crossing. Jack Carlson, the investigating patrolman on the scene, said Van Vleet was traveling at about 45 miles an hour when he was hit. Van Vleet, according to witnesses had been traveling at a high rate of speed and slowed to 35 miles an hour approaching the crossing. He made his decision and accelerated. Services for the 22 year old Ritzville resident were held at the Danekas Funeral chapel in Ritzville last Saturday at 2 p.m. Reverend Edward Schmidt of Lind officiated at the ceremony. Sacred musical selections, "In The Garden," and "Whispering Hope" were sung by Merill Womach who also played the accompaniment on the organ. Pallbearers were Joel Blankenship, Chester Templin, Delbert Templin, K. G. Plager, Gary Galbreath and Dale Galbreath. Interment was at the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Van Vleet is survived by his father Guy Van Vleet of Ritzville, his mother Catherine, his brothers Dale of Oregon, Ronni of Lakeland Village in Medical Lake, Nathan, Robert and Perry, all of Ritzville. Onno J. Kalkwarf Dies In Ritzville Sunday Afternoon Services for Onno J. Kalkwarf were held Wednesday in Emanuel Lutheran church in Ritzville at 1:30 p.m. Kalkwarf died last Sunday at 3:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Ritzville Memorial hospital of an apparent heart attack. The Ritzville resident was 75 years old. Burial services were held at the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Rev. Floyd Yokers officiated at the ceremony. Bruce Hille sang the sacred selections, "Face to Face," and "In The Garden." He was accompanied by Mrs. Orville Moeller on the organ. Kalkwarf is survived by his wife, Minnie; his sister, Mrs. Denzel Dyer of Bend, Ore., Mrs Louie Rector of Bend, Ore., Mrs. Harry Denison of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Dale Jackson of Walla Walla, Mrs. William Pratt of Wenatchee; his brothers, P. J. Kalkwarf of Hillsboro, Ore., and Arthur Kalkwarf of Aberdeen. The Kalkwarfs had no children, but he is survived by many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers at the funeral were Wayne Freeman, Fred Schwisow, Paul Meyer, Stan Telecky, Milton Schwisow and Harry Schwisow. Kalkwarf was a member of C. J. Newland Post 51 of the American Legion in Ritzville and a member of Emanuel Lutheran church. Legion members assisted at the cemetery. Former Tucnan Dies Recently WASHTUCNA - A former Washtucna resident, Mrs. Bert (Louise) Burkland of Longview, died recently. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George W. Bassett, who were the first pioneer family in Washtucna. After graduating from Washington State university, Mrs. Burkland taught for several years in the Washtucna high school. For many years she was high school librarian in Kelso. She is survived by her husband, Bert Burkland, and two sisters, Mrs. Lloyd Bury of Pullman and Miss Esther H. Bassett of Los Angeles, Calif. Her brother, Robert H. Bassett, passed away several months ago. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 21, 1968 Roy William Cook Funeral Is Held Tuesday Afternoon Services for Roy William Cook of Sprague were held Tuesday at the Sprague Community church at 2 p.m. Officiating at the ceremony were Reverend L. L. Stogsdill and Reverend Francis L. Klontz. Cook died November 15 at the age of 64. Sacred selections were "Whispering Hope," and "How Great Thou Art." The soloist was Donna Swannack and the organist was Ruth Knigge. Casket bearers were Arthur Tuggle, Bernard Robertson, Cecil Colyar, Harry Cook, Shelly Robertson and Jean Sarchet. Concluding services and interment were at the Macabee cemetery in Sprague. Cook is survived by his wife, Louetta; his daughter, Mrs. Curtis White of Lamont; his mother, Mrs. Rosa Cook of Sprague and three grandchildren. He was a member of the Palouse Rock Lake Soil and Water Conservation district, American Legion Post 40, Royal Arch number 8, the Lamont Grange, Sprague and St. John Gun clubs, Lamont Grain Growers, a past member of the Lamont school board, the state Wheat Growers and the American Angus association. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, November 28, 1968 No obituaries were printed this week. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 5, 1968 Lillian Scott Dies December 3 Mrs. Roy P. (Lillian B.) Scott died at Deaconess hospital in Spokane December 3. Funeral services are in the care of Ross Hollywood Mortuary in Portland, Ore. Mrs. Scott had made her home in Ritzville since her marriage in 1960 to Roy P. Scott, now deceased. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William Andrew, Toronto, Can., and Mrs. J. Malcolm McMinn, Oswego, Ore.; four grandchildren, Michael, Joel, Craig and Peter McMinn; her mother, a brother and a sister. Funeral Rites Held for Lena Railsback LIND - Funeral services were conducted for Miss Lena Railsback at the Smith Funeral home chapel Tuesday afternoon, November 26. Interment was at Riverside Memorial Park. Miss Railsback was born on a farm near Hannibal, Mo., in 1886. She lived most of the time in Spokane where she was a dressmaker. She is survived by four nieces, Mrs. Ray Adamson of Deer Park, Mrs. Genevieve Gehres of Lind, Mrs. Rosalie Page of Seattle, Roberta Kinderhilt of California, and a nephew, George Railsback in California. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 12, 1968 Dorothy Sauer Services Held Here Monday Funeral services for Dorothy Linder Sauer were held Monday in the chapel of the Danekas Funeral home. The 2 p.m. services were officiated by Reverend Donald Russell of the Assembly of God church in Ritzville. Mrs. Sauer died last Thursday in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Rudolph Sauer where she had been living the past 32 years. The 91-year-old woman is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Sauer of Ritzville, Mrs. Lina Sabuy of Killdeer, N. Dak., Mrs. Mary Chandler of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. Hilda Delzer of Airway Heights. The Russian-born woman is also survived by her son Albert Erdman of Hatton. She is survived by two sisters living in Germany. They are Mrs. Luise Liebelt and Mrs. Berta Neumann. She leaves 33 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren and five great-great- grandchildren. She has been a resident of the United States for the past 53 years. She was born in Russia in 1877. Pallbearers at the funeral were Alvin Erdman, Adolph Sauer, Walter Erdman, Hilmer Sauer, Willie Erdman and Clifford Sauer. Sacred selections were "Beautiful Garden of Prayer," and "Nearer My God to Thee." The soloist and organist was Merrill Womach. Concluding services and interment was at the Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Memorial Service for Pioneer Lady Planned Dec. 15 Mrs. Lena Hollenshead, 87, of Seattle, a former resident of the Ritzville area for 37 years, died December 3 in a Seattle hospital. She was born in Germany in 1881 and moved to Ritzville in 1887. She later moved to Seattle in 1925. Mrs. Hollenshead is survived by one son, Harley Hollenshead of Bremerton; three daughters, Mrs. S. E. Fauver and Mrs. Lola Stevens, both Seattle, and Mrs. Edna Bruihl of Chattaroy. Three brothers, George Plager and Paul Plager, both Spokane, and Rudolph Plager of Ritzville also survive as do 10 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. She was a member of Ritzville First Christian church and Pioneers of Washington. Cremation was held with cremain burial in the Lind cemetery. Memorial services will be held December 15 at 2 p.m. in Ploeger-Hart Mortuary Chapel in Seattle. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 19, 1968 Funeral Services Held for Cornelius Allert, 79 Funeral services for Cornelius Allert were held at the Menno Mennonite church Wednesday at 2 p.m. Reverend Harris Waltner, pastor of the Menno Mennonite church, officiated at the services. After the ceremony interment was held at the Menno cemetery. The long time resident of Ritzville was born February 8, 1889, and died December 15. He is survived by three sons, Robert Allert of Lacrosse, Richard Allert of Ritzville and Dewayne Allert of Moscow, Ida.; five daughters, Mrs. Beulah Skov of Yakima, Mrs. James (Violet) Lucas of Moscow, Ida., Mrs. Don (Eva) Hollingbery of Moses Lake, Mrs. William (Edith) Nicols of Norwalk, Conn., and Mrs. Malcolm (Henrietta) Fishback of Silver Springs, Md. He is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Gertrude Coleman of Ritzville and his four brothers, Walter Allert of Ritzville, Fritz Allert of Rosalia, William Allert of Benge and John Allert of Medical Lake. The 79 year old man had 27 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Menno Mennonite church at Ritzville, the Washington State Cattleman's Association, the Marcellus Grange and the Adams County Association of Wheat Growers. The sacred selection at Allert's funeral was sung by a quartet that included Leslie Schrag, Curtis Gering, Gordon Gering and Joe Jantz. The quartet sang "The Many Mansions." A solo was also sung by Schrag, He sang "The Lord's Prayer." The organist was Mrs. Joe Jantz. Pallbearers included Richard Allert, Ross Hollingbery, Paul Allert, Gary Skov, Gerald Allert, Richard Fishback, Leslie Allert, Jeff Hollingbery, Pete Skov, Lt. William Donaldson, Robert Fishback, Douglas West and Lt. Robert M. Allert, Jr. Carl Benzel Rites Held Saturday in Harrington Carl Benzel, 59, died December 11 at his home in Harrington. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Harrington Community church with the Rev. Willard Hall officiating. Benzel, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Benzel, is survived by his wife, Anna, in Harrington. They were married in 1934. He was employed by the Ritzville Trading company for 13 years and spent several years in defense work in Seattle before he started farming. He lived in the Harrington community for 25 years. Other survivors include a son, Edward, a student at WSU in Pullman; four brothers, Fred Benzel, Jake Benzel and Alex Benzel of Scottsbluff, Neb., Rheiny Benzel of Renton, and two sisters, Mrs. Nick Schafer and Mrs. Elmer Heimbigner. Burial was at the Hillcrest cemetery in Harrington. Pallbearers were Herbert Benzel, Bob Benzel, Douglas Benzel, Jon Heimbigner, Barry Heimbigner and Cameron Heimbigner. Kalkwarf Sister Dies Word has been received here of the death in Bend, Ore., on December 15 of Mrs. Denzel Theresa Kalkwarf Dyer, oldest sister of the late Onno Kalkwarf. Harry Knox Rites Held on Saturday WASHTUCNA - Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Stoess, Howard, Lloyd and George Stone went to Lacrosse Saturday afternoon to attend the funeral of Harry Knox which were held at the Methodist Community church. Interment was at the Lacrosse cemetery. Funeral Rites Held for H. Hollenshead Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the Lewis Funeral chapel in Bremerton for Harley H. Hollenshead, 69, who died December 16 at Harrison Memorial hospital there. Cremation followed. He was born January 6, 1899, in Lind. He was a resident of Kitsap county for the past 33 years. He was a retired carpenter from the Puget Sound naval shipyard, a member of the United Brotherhood of carpenters and joiners, and of the Bremerton F.O.E. no. 192. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, in Bremerton; three sisters, Mrs. Edna Bruihl of Chattaroy, Mrs. Gladys Fauver and Mrs. Lola Stevens, both of Seattle. Ritzville Journal-Times, Thursday, December 26, 1968 Mrs. Talley's Mother Buried in Bridgeport Funeral services were held in Bridgeport December 18 for Mrs. Bessie Bost, mother of Mrs. Leo Talley. She died December 15 in the Chelan hospital. In addition to Mrs. Talley, other survivors include four daughters and two sons, 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. Eckhardt Rites Held at Zion on Saturday Funeral services were held Saturday at Zion Congregational church for Carl Eckhardt, 76, who died here December 19 of an apparent heart attack. The Rev. Roger Berthold conducted the services. Carl Eckhardt was born January 1, 1892, at Walla Walla and moved to the Ritzville area at the age of 6. He farmed in the area during his entire lifetime. Moving to Ritzville about 10 years ago, he continued to operate his farm. He is survived by his wife, Emilie; two daughters, Mrs. Bernadine Wright of Spokane and Mrs. Edna Murry of Wenatchee; one son, Walter J. Eckhardt of Richland; a sister, Mrs. George Fast of Ritzville, and a brother, Jacob Eckhardt of Ritzville. There are 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a member of Zion Congregational church, the Zion Men's club and the Adams County Association of Wheat Growers. Gordon Swyter sang "It Is Well With My Soul," and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" at the services to the organ accompaniment of Lexie Ann Danekas. Pallbearers were Art Kiehn, Carl Kiehn, Henry Bise, John Freese, Judge George Freese and Carl Hoefel. Honorary pallbearers were Edward Cross, Alven Lenhart, Charles Schwerin, Clarence Schoessler and Richard Buddrius. Interment was at Ritzville Memorial cemetery.
