The federal government gave 53 acres of land overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the city of Port Angeles. In 1940 the pioneer cemetery was moved to the present sight of the Ocean View Cemetery. The City now has responsibility for the operation of the cemetery. NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR CEMETERY 1986 A 35-year-old Peninsula College student Bo Ossinger started digging into records at Ocean View Cemetery as part of a data processing project for the College. He found dusty old deed books going back to the end of the 19th century, and found the record keeping at the cemetery lacking. As Bo pondered the curious volumes; nearly 100 year old; he discovered bits of trivia both historic and current. Bodies washed ashore, and buried in plots marked unknown. The problem for Ossinger was most interesting, trying to build a computer system which would allow for all the incongruities at the cemetery. Lots bought and sold and bought again, somebody dug up and moved. Trying to keep track of nearly a 100 years of changes; much incomplete information. Bo learned that a bit of 1980s technology was needed at the cemetery. The cemetery manager Ralph Dyker agreed. Municipal cemeteries are required by state law to keep records. Dyker was interested in the time it will save; a request for information would cause Dyker to pore over 35 years of records, going back page by page through two or three deed books of a couple of hundred pages each. With the computer system he will be able to find the information in a matter of minutes. A cemetery generates a tremendous volume of information which is needed for each burial, some two dozen items of information must be entered, including name, social security number, date of birth, date of death, date interred, type of interment, name of arranger and relationship, and funeral director. Multiply this by the number of burials at the cemetery, and one can see that a computer is needed to deal with these two hundred thousand items. Keeping track of the old burials is not a simple undertaking. For some burials-such as Civil War veterans not all the information is available. Some of the older graves contained several bodies. Other problems cropped up. They find bodies buried where they are not supposed to be. One body was buried halfway between one lot and the next lot, this has to be called grave "4a" so it can be entered into the new computer data base. The Fraternal Organization Inscriptions, found on the stones have not recorded.
