J. Clarke Publishing Company The life record of the late Frank N. Marshall was closely identified with the commercial history of Vancouver, and his career was marked by an untiring activity and soundness of judgment that enabled him to win a large measure of success. He was of the highest type of progressive citizen and none more than he deserved fitting recognition among those whose efforts contributed to the welfare and prosperity of the community in which he lived. Mr. Marshall was born in 1856 in Waterbury, Vermont, and was a son of Lucius and Pamelia (Allen) Marshall, also natives of that state, the mother being a direct descendant of Ethan Allen. Frank N. Marshall secured his education in the public schools and remained at home until 1877, when he came to Vancouver, Washington, and went to work for L. M. Hidden. About a year later he entered the employ of Charles Slocum, a merchant of the city, with whom he gained valuable business experience. Subsequently he formed a partnership with William and Edward Crawford, under the firm name of Crawford & Marshall, and successfully engaged in a mercantile business for twenty years, or until 1910, when Mr. Marshall sold his interest and for about three years was not actively engaged in business affairs. He was then connected with the hardware trade in association with C. M. McCall, and the store of Marshall & McCall became one of the best known mercantile establishments in Vancouver, Mr. Marshall remaining identified with the business up to the time of his death, which occurred April 8, 1923, after which Mrs. Marshall sold his interest to the store. He was a man of clear-headed and practical ideas, sterling integrity of motive and action and courteous and accommodating — in fact, was recognized as the ideal business man, who commanded to a marked degree the confidence and respect of all who had dealings with him. In February, 1893, Mr. Marshall was united in marriage to Miss Alma E. Clough, who was born and reared in Waterbury, Vermont. Her parents, Storrs S. and Betsy Jane (Snyder) Clough, were also natives of Vermont, the father born in Waterbury and the mother in Huntington. In her girlhood Mrs. Marshall moved to Roxbury, Vermont, where she attended the public schools, later graduating from Montpelier Seminary. She taught school for several years in the east, and in 1886 came to the Pacific coast, living in California one year, and in 1887 becoming a resident of Vancouver, Washington, where she taught two years in the public schools. In his political views, Mr. Marshall was a stanch republican and was actively interested in public affairs, particularly of his own locality, having served a number of terms as a member of the city council, in which body he gave his earnest support to all measures calculated to promote the welfare of the city. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, and his religious connection was with the Methodist Episcopal church, to which Mrs. Marshall also belongs. He stood consistently for the best things in the life of the community and gave liberally of his time and means for the benefit of all worthy causes. Kindly and affable in manner, he had many warm and devoted friends and throughout the range of his acquaintance was held in the highest regard. Mrs. Marshall is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and, due to her gracious and tactful manner and her excellent qualities of character, is deservedly popular among her associates.
