J. Clarke Publishing Company C. E. MCCALL, president of the Marshall-McCall Company of Vancouver, has filled a large place in the affairs of his community, of which he has been a resident for over twenty-five years, and his record has stamped him as a man of superior business judgment and sagacity, which, together with his uniform courtesy and fair dealing, have been the contributing elements to his success. Mr. McCall was born in Pennsylvania and is a son of S. S. McCall, now deceased, who was a building contractor by vocation. Neither he nor his wife ever came west, their deaths occurring in Pennsylvania. C. E. McCall secured a good public school education in his native state and then clerked in a hardware store at Dubois, Pennsylvania, until 1901, when he came to Washington, locating in Seattle in September. In March of the following year he removed to Vancouver and entered the employ of the Crawford-Marshall Company, with which concern he remained until 1911, when the present company was organized and incorporated. Its first president was F. N. Marshall, of the Crawford-Marshall Company, which is no longer in existence and which dealt in groceries and hardware. Mr. Marshall is now deceased and the present officers of the Marshall-McCall Company are C. E. McCall, president; V. W. McCall, a brother of C. E., vice president; and J. M. Conrad, secretary and treasurer, all three of these gentlemen taking an active part in the operation of the store. The business was formerly located at the corner of Eighth and Washington streets but is now at 606 Main street, where it has the advantage of better facilities for the conduct of the business, which has enjoyed a steady and substantial growth until theirs is now one of the leading concerns in its line in the Columbia River valley. The company carries a large and complete line of shelf and heavy hardware, paint, oil, glass, crockery, kitchen hardware and builders hardware, and is the sole agent for Clark county for the W. P. Fuller paints. While living in Pennsylvania, Mr. McCall was united in marriage to Miss Adelva Osborne, to which union have been born three children, namely: Mary, who was born in Pennsylvania and is the wife of R. H. Inman, manager for the Shell Oil Company at Vancouver; Helen, who was born in Vancouver and is a student in Washington State College, and Robert, who is in high school. Mr. McCall is a member of the Masonic fraternity, in which he has received the degrees as far as the commandery of Knights Templar; the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias, in both of which orders he has passed through the chairs. He also belongs to the Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce, in the latter of which he has served as a director for many years. Mr. McCall was chief of the fire department of Vancouver for twenty-five years, during which period the city gained a splendid reputation for the smallness of its fire loss. He has been active in civic affairs and has contributed in every possible way to the advancement and betterment of the community. Progressive and enterprising in his ideas and methods, he is numbered among the leading business men of Vancouver and has proven well worthy of the high place which he holds in public regard.
