J. Clarke Publishing Company HUGH MULLIGAN, who has aractically retired from active business pursuits, was for many years active and prominent in the commercial life of Vancouver, where he realized a large measure of success, and is numbered among the worthy and respected citizens of his community. He was born in California on November 25, 1865, and is a son of Owen and Susan (Daugherty) Mulligan, both of whom were natives of Ireland, their marriage occurring in California. His father had come to this country in 1849 and was engaged in mining in the Golden state until about 1867, when he came to Clark county, Washington, and bought the Shuk donation claim of three hundred and twenty acres at Joggy Station, practically none of which had been cleared, and to the improvement and development of that place he devoted his attention indefatigably during the ensuing years, creating a valuable farm, which is about all cleared. In the early days his main products were wheat, oats, hay, cattle, sheep and hogs, but in later years more attention is given to raising corn, for which the soil is well adapted. Mr. Mulligan remained on the ranch until 1894, when he moved into Vancouver, where he lived until his death, in 1919. His wife died in 1909. To them were born eight children, namely: Thomas, who now lives on the old home place; Hugh; John, who died in the Philippines; May, who died in childhood; Owen, who lives in Astoria, Washington; Susan, who lives in Portland, Oregon; Joseph, of Vancouver; and Mrs. Nellie McGee, who died, leaving a daughter, who lives in California. Mr. Mulligan was a man of sound judgment, took an interest in local public affairs, and served one term as a member of the city council. Hugh Mulligan was about two years old when the family came to Clark county and in the district school of his home neighborhood received his educational training. He remained on the home farm several years and then came to Vancouver and ran a butcher shop, which his father had started while still living on the ranch. This store, called the Washington market, was located on Main street, opposite Fourth street, and proved a successful venture, Mr. Mulligan continuing to devote his attention to butchering and the sale of meat until about 1915, since which time he has not been actively engaged in business. In 1905 Mr. Mulligan was united in marriage to Miss Eva Hildreth, who was born in Scappoose, Columbia county, Oregon, and is a daughter of Daniel and Olive (Dietdrich) Hildreth, who are now living at Scio, Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Mulligan are the parents of a son, John D., who is employed by the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railroad at Vancouver, and is married and has a son, Richard. In every relation of life Mr. Mulligan has been true to his principles, has been honorable in all of his dealings and has shown a commendable interest in the welfare of his fellowmen, so that he is well worthy of their confidence and good will.
