Groshong of White Salmon. The house beautifully decorated with wild holly,ferns and several large bouquets of chrysanthemums. A sumptious repast was prepared by the daughters which was served by the granddaughters. Covers were laid for fifteen at the first table and 19 at the second. The children who were present were E.G.Zimmerman and wife,N.M.Zimmerman and wife,Mrs.A.B.Groshong, Mrs.R.J. White and husband,Mrs.L.W.Wood,Mrs.Canavan and husband. The grandchildren were Mrs.Grace Palmer and husband, Arden Zimmerman,Elsie Zimmerman,Arbra Zimmerman,Mrs.Lily Higdon and husband,Miss Dea Gilrey and C.L. Gilroy,Miss Eunice Wood,Miss Iduna Ernstrom, Miss Litha White,Iden Zimmerman and Gram Zimmerman. The great grandchildren were Gene Palmer and Frances Higdon. Charles McKee, who was brought up from early childhood by Grandpa and Grandma Zimmerman, was also present. Other guests were Rev.Mr.Romlager of Underwood,Mr. and Mrs. J.E.O.Flaherty and Miss Mary Young. Mrs. O'Flaherty is a sister of Mrs. Zimmerman and Miss Young is a niece of Mr. Zimmerman.Those three guests Mr. and Mrs.J.E.O'Flaherty and Miss Young had the pleasure of partaking of the wedding feast with Mr. and Mrs.Zimmerman 50 years ago.Miss Young's father performed the marriage ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Zimmerman received many useful and beautiful presents. As the presents came in all Grandpa Zimmerman could say was:"I did not think 50 years ago I would now have such foolish children to spend their money for such luxury." Both old people are in good health and can spend the balance of their reclining years in comfort on their beautiful farm,known as the"Leaning Oaks" located in the heart of the Glenwood valley,which they carved out of the wilderness and where they have spent their joys and sorrows together since the year 1872. Granpda and Grandma Zimmerman bid farewell to relatives and friends in Iowa,Nov.22,1871. They came by rail to San Fransisco, from thence by water landing in Fort Vancouver,Dec.16. They settled on their present farm,November,1872,erecting a log cabin near where the Congregational church now stands.Mr.Zimmerman formerly owned 16 acres. The Glenwood school was built on the northwest corner of the farm in the year 1889, and the Congregational church was built on the southwest corner in 1908.
