LaCamas Post December 5, 1908
On Nov. 24 a very pleasant surprise party was given at the residence of 
F.E.Payne in honor of the seventy ninth birthday of Grandma Payne. This hale 
ols lady, though having arrived at the riep old age of almost four score 
years, met her many friends with a hearty welcome. All wished her a happy 
birthday .
Sarah L. Barmore was born in Vigo County, Indiana, the 24 of Nov. 1829, and 
was married to D.M.Payne on the 27 of Feb. 1851. The followingn year the young 
couple, strong in hope and ambition decided to leave home and friends behind, 
and seek a home in the west then known as Oregon. Joining an emmigrant team, 
they crossed the plains with an ox team. After spending some six or eight 
months of hardships, they arrived safe and sound at what is known as the 
Cascades.
Drifting down the river, they finally settled on the north bank of the 
Columbia, and took up a donation claim, now known as the Knight place, two 
miles from her present home. She is the mother of five children of which four 
are living.
Those who were invited to assist in celebrating her seventy ninth birthday 
were: GRandma Delaney, Mrs.Lizzie Barthelemy, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Doherty, Mr. and 
Mrs. S.G. Hadley, Mr and mrs. T.W. Mangum and daughter Elida, Mrs. George 
Holamn, of Portland, W.H.Payne and wif eo fGrass valley, F.E. Payne and wife 
of Grass Valley, mr. and Mrs. Ed Bauer of Piedmont, Mrs. C.W. Magnum, of 
Camas, Miss Mary Payne of Grass Valley, Hazel,Esther,John and Wesley Payne, 
all of Grass Valley and Harold Magnum.
