A dredger is at worknear the dock,cleaning out the harbor. Mayor Harrington,who has been in poor health for several months,is feeling much better,and has again resumes his place with the mill company. Bids for constructing a trestle on Columbia street near O'Brien's were opened at the city clerk's office Wednesday, and the contract was awarded to Chas.Lawrence for $45. Wm.Steenson,of Washougal,one of the unique characters of the Northwest,was in town the first of the week.He recently suffered a severe strain of the ankle,and in consequence was not in his usual jolly mood. Ralph Cane, a laborer,was arrested here by Marshal Warren Monday evening on a charge of stealing a pair of shoes.He was arraigned before Justice Self and pleaded guilty,and was sent to thirty days in the county jail.Marshal Warren took the man to Vancouver Wednesday morning.Cane worked here a week or two ago,and when he left a pair of shoes belonging to a fellow laborer disappeared.Monday Cane returned and was wearing the shoes in question.A row ensued at the camp,and the marshal arrived just in time to prevent a fight.He took Cane in charge and the man who lost the shoes made the complaint. Jack Kelly,who worked for several months in McDowall's barber shop,was in town this week greeting his many friends.He is now located at Woodland,where he had a shop. A laborer named Hale,who was working on the tramway,was struck by a cable Friday of last week and was thrown from the tramway to the ground several feet below.He was unconscious several hours,but has now considerably improved,although it is reported he will be some time in recovering.
