Vancouver Independent August 9,1906
John Guthrie, a lineman for the Pacific States Telephone Company, committed 
suicide last week by shooting himself with a revolver at a lonely spot in the 
woods six miles north on the Main street road. He was eveidently demented as he 
had been acting very strange for some time. He had been dead nearly a week when 
found. The people in the vicinity had noticed the stench for several days and 
finally Andrew Quarnberg and William Trant made a systematic search and 
discovered the body. Letters from friends in Philadelphia and a certificate of 
deposit on the National Bank in Portland were found on his person.
