Clarke, superintendent of the State School for the Deaf. Only a few of closest friends and relatives of the bride and groom were present.       The bride, who was attended by her sister, Miss Grace Beattie, was charming in a handsome gown of white satin, elaborated with lace and full length veil. Prof. Clarke was attended by his nephew, William E Clarke. The Episcopal service with Rev. H. S. Templeton and E. R. Collier as officiating clergymen was used.       Immediately after the ceremony a dinner was served for the bridal party at the State School for the Deaf. Prof. and Mrs. Clarke left for a motor tour of Willamentte valley.       Mrs. Clarke is sister-in-law to Carl Grey (sic), recently president of the Great Northern railway,and now president of Maryland Eastern. She came to Washington last fall to take charge of the girls of the State School for the Deaf, and since her arrival has made a host of warm friends in Vancouver. Prof. Clarke has for many years been superintendent of the State School here.             <~      ~      ~      ~     ~>       Additional Comments: Mary Borland Beattie was born 2 Apr 1875, Memphis, Shelby county, Tennessee, graduated 1896 from Arkansas Industrial University with distinction, worked with deaf schools in Arkansas, Michigan and now Washington, Mother is twice widowed, Mrs Mary Melbourne (Borland) Beattie- Gray, youngest daughter of U S Senator Solon Borland (1811VA-1864TX), of Arkansas. Her father, John M Beattie of Scotland, died during 1878 yellow fever epidemic of Memphis with some 5,000 others. Thomas Pollock Devereux Clarke was born 1859 in San Antonio, Bexar county, Texas son of Colonel William J Clarke and Mary Bayard Devereux, while at Arkansas School for the Deaf married Lottie Kirkland, who went with him to Flint Michigan where his brother, Francis Devereux Clarke was superintendent, next to Oregon Deaf school then in 1906 became superintendent in Washington. First wife Lottie passed awaay in 1913.
