J. Clarke Publishing Company DR. ALLAN S. NICHOLSON is numbered among those who are protecting and conserving the physical welfare of the people of Longview, Washington, and his efforts have been crowned with a measure of success that has gained for him high standing in professional ranks of this locality. Dr. Nicholson was born on Prince Edward island, Canada, on the 24th of June, 1882, and is a son of Samuel and Ann (Nicholson) Nicholson, who, though of the same name, were not related. Samuel Nicholson was born on Prince Edward island, July 27, 1846, moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1883 and was for many years engaged in the contracting and building business, but is now retired and lives in that city. His wife, who was born on Prince Edward island in 1858, died in 1888. The Doctor's ancestors in the paternal line came from Glasgow, Scotland, while his maternal ancestors were from the Isle of Man. Two of his father's brothers, Murdoch and Alex, were soldiers in the Union army during the Civil war, having enlisted from Maine, and the first named was killed in the battle of Bull Run. Allan S. Nicholson received his educational training in the public schools of St. Paul, Minnesota, graduating from high school, after which he attended a preparatory school called Hamline University, at St. Paul. He matriculated in the National Medical University, was graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1905, and in the following year received the same degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Chicago. He served one year as interne in the Westside Emergency Hospital, Chicago, and during the subsequent years has done considerable postgraduate work. In 1907 the Doctor engaged in the practice of his profession at Max, McLean county, North Dakota, where he remained for nine years, after which he was at Williston, that state, for five years. In December, 1923, he came to Longview, opened an office in the Barnes building and has since given his entire attention to the general practice of medicine. He is a member of the medical staff of the Longview Memorial Hospital and has in an unmistakable manner demonstrated his high qualifications as a physician and surgeon. Dr. Nicholson was married May 7, 1907, at Bismarck, North Dakota, to Miss Iva Beamish, who was born in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, in 1889, and was of Irish ancestry. She died January 31, 1919, leaving one child, Lorne, who was born at Max, North Dakota, November 6, 1912. For his second wife the Doctor chose Miss Petra M. Braaten, who was born at Ada, Minnesota, August 17, 1893, and is a daughter of T. T. and Benjamina (Mellang) Braaten. Her father, who is of Norwegian ancestry, was born at Kenyon, Minnesota, October 25, 1860, and is now engaged in the insurance business in Ada, that state. Her mother was born in Tronjhem, Norway, October 5, 1861, and is a descendant of Peter Dass, a native of Scotland, who settled in Bergen, Norway, in an early day, and there became prominent as a statesman. Mrs. Braaten came to the United States in 1879 with her parents, who settled in Minnesota, and her death occurred in May, 1925, at Ada, that state. Mrs. Nicholson has taken an active interest in the social and civic affairs of Longview, being a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, the Auxiliary to the American Legion and auxiliary to the Elks. She is a graduate of the Ada (Minnesota) high school and the State Normal School, and is a graduate nurse. Her brother, Clarence Braaten, is a veteran of the World war, having served overseas with a Minnesota infantry regiment. To Dr. and Mrs. Nicholson was born a son, Donald, on August 5, 1922, at Williston, North Dakota. Dr. Nicholson is independent in his political views, voting for the candidates who in his judgment are best qualified for the offices they seek. He is a member of Garrison Lodge, No. 90, A. F. & A. M., at Max, North Dakota; Longview Lodge, B. P. O. E.; the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce. A man of sterling character and an agreeable personality, he has won a large circle of warm friends since coming to Longview and throughout the community he is highly regarded for his professional ability and his loyal citizenship.
