Cowlitz County, Washington - JACKSON CEMETERY Jackson Cemetery, Castle Rock, WA The US GenWeb Archives provide genealogical and historical data to the general public without fee of charge of any kind; it is intended that this material not be used in a commercial manner. All submissions become part of the permanent collection. The Jackson cemetery is located along what was once the military road from Monticello to Loympia. It became the final resting place for the pioneer Jackson family, neighbors and some travelers from 1855 through the 1940's. It is estimated that there are 80 burials on the knoll which is accessible only by foot. The cemetery is under the management of Cemeter District #1, but it is not actively maintained. There have been efforts to keep the cemetery cleaned up but interest, line the old road, has faded. According to an article entitled "The Jackson's of Jackson Inn" by Donald Maddux in the first issue of the Cowlitz County Historical Quarterly, May 1959, Sarah Jackson was the first white person in northern Cowlitz County to die. She was "buried near the edge of the hill." Her headstone and foot stone are still legible, stating: Sarah E. Daughter of H. & E. Jackson Died May 14, 1855 Aged 14 years 7 mo. 12 days This information was compiled by Linda Harris and LaVada Gustin in 1982. In 1987, Isetta Clegg visited with a Leland Jackson and was able to obtain more complete dates and some family relationships of those buried in the cemetery.
