David was born on April 24, 1948 in Longview, WA to Viljo and Kallie (Kockritz) Basso of Kalama, WA. David was a fourth generation Kalama resident. He started his education in a one room schoolhouse, Cloverdale Elementary, and continued through school with many of the same classmates. While in high school David was a lineman for the Kalama football team, was an active member of FFA, and graduated from Kalama High School in 1966. After graduation he continued his education at LCC in the apprentice programs of carpentry and millwrighting. He joined Local 1707 in 1966. He worked first as a carpenter and then as a millwright, spending the last 28 years with JHKelly. As a supervisor with JHKelly, he was able to travel the West Coast extensively. Respected in his field, David made many friends throughout his career. David was a quiet man who enjoyed sailing, traveling, and his family. He was a longtime member of the Kalama Lions Club, earning the prestigious Melvin Jones Award. He was also a member of the Kalama Sailing Club for many years. David was always willing to lend a hand to help with community needs. David is survived by his wife of 28 years, Pix Basso; his daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Robert Holden of Umatilla, OR; his son and daughter-in-law, Viljo and Autumn Basso of Coeur d'Alene, ID; brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Cindy Basso of Tacoma, WA, and brother and sister-in-law, Alan and Vickie Basso of Kalama, WA. He also was survived by three grandchildren, Mariah and David Holden of Umatilla, and Ezra Basso of Coeur d'Alene; nephews, Brandon Basso of Kodiak, AK; Keith Arik Basso of Orlando, FL; and niece, Brittany Basso of Kalama. In addition to his family he leaves behind a great many friends and people who cared for him. The Memorial Service for David will be Monday, May 22, at the Steele Chapel, 5050 Mt. Solo Road, Longview, WA. The service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday There will be a time to visit, eat and further remember David at the Cloverdale Fire Station on Todd Road, Kalama, following the service.
