He was born in Ketchikan, Alaska in 1984 to Chuck Bateman and Teresa Fiest- Sadler. He grew up on Prince of Wales Island living the Southeast Alaska bush lifestyle. Charlie attended elementary school in Toutle, Washington, high school in Coffman Cove, Alaska and completed high school at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Washington. He most enjoyed being the class clown, and yet was very talented and had a special aptitude in math and music. He enjoyed hunting and the Alaska wilderness, especially camping and canoeing the Honker Divide Canoe Route near Thorne Bay, Alaska. He worked after finishing high school as a logger throughout Alaska and recently returned to Longview, WA, planning to enter a plumbing apprentice program early next year. He worked as a carpenter for several years prior to his passing. Charlie's great love was music. During the summer of his junior year he attended a workshop in Boston at the Berkley School of Music. He had learned to play the guitar from his father and showed tremendous talent for music, both in playing and composing. Charlie was working with a local group of friends who were starting a band here in Longview at the time of his death. He will be most remembered for his gift of kindness and acceptance of everyone he met. He had lots of southern charm and made great eggnog. He was a skilled impersonator and was nicknamed "Smiley" as a baby for his constant, and sometimes devilish grin. He was a natural builder and worked with his Dad and Uncle Bill Bateman building houses and his "Waterworld dream boat," a trimaran, which he often sailed in the bay of Coffman Cove. There are not words to express how much Charlie was loved by his family and friends and his life was such a gift to us. As we say goodbye to this loved member of our family, we want to thank everyone who has offered thoughts and prayers, food and kindnesses to the entire Bateman and Feist-Sadler families. It has been very beneficial to the healing process and is helping us to move on with our lives. Charlie was preceded in death by his grandfather, Harve Bateman and is survived by his parents, Chuck Bateman and Teresa Fiest-Sadler; his step-parents, Deedee Bateman and Roy Sadler; his sisters Kassi Bateman, Kerrie Carl, and Krista Johnson; grandparents Stanley and Donna Fiest; Grandmother Rebecca Bateman; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and many well-loved friends. Charlie's funeral will be Wednesday November 2nd at 1 pm, Toutle Christian Fellowship, Toutle, Washington. In lieu of flowers or monetary donations the family asks that we continue Charlie's legacy of kindness. If there is an occasion for you to do a random act of kindness toward another, such as help a neighbor in need, please do so in memory of Charlie. It is how he lived his life and we can best respect his memory.
