"Art" Beck, 88, peacefully passed away surrounded by family in the early hours of Sunday morning, February 26th 2006. He was born in East Willapa, Washington and raised in Kelso. After graduating from the University of Washington in 1942, he went to work as a chemical engineer at Rayonier's Hoquiam pulp mill. He retired after 17 years as Pulp Mill Superintendent in 1986. He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, antiquing and fishing. He was an accomplished woodworker and a founding member and treasurer of The Ancient Mariners, a group of senior citizens who work as volunteers at the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport. He married Margaret Dixon of Kelso in 1944. In addition to his wife of 61 years, he is survived by four children, Steve of Aberdeen, John of San Francisco, Jeanne of Orcas Island and Colleen of Redmond, Washington. Additionally he is survived by his brother Stanley of Longview and by five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his grandson Shane.
