She was born Dec. 13, 1920, in Sycamore, Ill., to Henry and Blenda Magnuson. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, John Johnson. She graduated from St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in 1941. Mrs. Bennett served three years in the Army Nurses Corps stationed in England during World War II. She was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant in 1952 and attended the University of California at Berkeley, receiving a bachelor's degree in nursing education and public health. She taught nursing at Cowlitz General Hospital and worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District's nursing department until retiring in 1983. She married James Austin Bennett on Sept. 29, 1952, in Kelso. He preceded her in death Feb. 16, 2000, and she moved to Lincoln City later that year. Survivors include a daughter, Ann Bennett; a brother, Leonard Magnuson; a niece, Babette Mattia; and three nephews, Bruce Magnuson, Barry Magnuson and Brian Magnuson. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Cowlitz View Memorial Gardens. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held at New Horizons Church in Kelso. A celebration of her life will follow at the home of Barry and Marcia Magnuson in Kelso. Arrangements are by Autumn Funeral & Cremation, Tigard, Ore.
