His parents were Norman L. Birtchet and Jessie (Sturgion). Lester, also known as Jack, lived in the Longview area since the 1930s and was a graduate of R.A. Long High School. Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing and horseback riding. He loved riding horses with his niece, Leslie Stiebritz and daughter, Patty. Jack served in the U.S. Army for 25 years and served in World War II – 1945, Korea, and two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded 3 Purple Hearts, Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star, 2 Silver Stars, 2 Bronze Stars and 1 Bronze with "V" Device for Valor. Jack is survived by his companion of 17 years, Joyce Hickman; son, Steven Birtchet; daughter, Patty Birtchet; brother, Richard Birtchet, all of Longview; sister, Norma Stiebritz of Woodland; ex-wife and lifetime friend, Maria Birtchet of Longview, Gary and Roberta Marsh and Karen Asbury of Longview.
