Stepp steppmom5@hotmail.com June 10, 2006, 4:52 pm Published in The Daily News on 5/20/2006. www.tdn.com/obits James Grant Bowden Jr. was born on the family homestead near Steamboat Springs, Colorado on August 29, 1915 and passed away on May 18, 2006 in Longview, Washington. Grant is survived by his wife, Helen of Kelso; sons, David of Woodland and Jim of Brick, New Jersey; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; sister, Mary Barber of Steamboat Springs and brother, Robert of Oklahoma. Grant's early life involved work on the family farm and dairy, work in a creamery and later as a Deputy County Assessor. World War II sent him off to Ranger School in the US Army and he was a Ranger and Scout in General Patton's campaign across Europe and was one of the first troops to liberate Bergen-Belson prisoner of war camps. He was then off to the Pacific, spending a year after WWII helping train the Philippine Army Scouts. He received the Bronze Star for action in Europe. Grant worked in machinery sales at Steamboat Springs and real estate sales in Scottsdale, Arizona until retirement to Lincoln City, OR in 1976 and moved to Kelso in 1991. Grant was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the American Legion. Grant loved people and had an endless supply of jokes and especially liked kidding the waitresses and clerks that he met. He always asked for a doggie bag for the silverware after a meal. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A Memorial Service will be held at Dahl McVicker Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 with later interment and Military Funeral in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
