Rachel was born on May 2, 1920 in Odell, Arkansas to Ella and Homer Richey. Her family moved to Bell Gardens, California when she was 17 and to Kelso in 1946. Rachel was a homemaker and raised four children in the family residence on South River Road in Kelso, living there for 23 years before moving to San Jose, California in 1969. She is a 1970 graduate of West Valley College with a certificate in Food Service Management, and was employed in the food service industry from 1971 until her retirement in 1980. During her years in Kelso, Rachel worked part time at the Sunshine Laundry. For many years, Sunday mornings would find her in her church nursery at Kelso First Assembly giving loving care to the babies and toddlers. Sunday afternoons and holidays her home was filled with extended family enjoying her wonderful cooking. "Her children will rise up and call her blessed," could be said of Rachel, as she instilled in each of them a loving environment and a deep faith in God. Rachel loved music and had a little song for just about every subject one could imaging. She always had time to play games and sing songs with her grandchildren. Surviving Rachel are her two sons, Larry (Barbara), Turlock, California; Jim (Lorella), Gig Harbor, WA; two daughters, Loretta (Marvin) Cortelyou, Arlington, WA, and Linda (Ken) Scott of Kelso; her beloved grandchildren, Larry (Alisa) Carlton, Vancouver, WA; Steve (Karen) Carlton, Rohnert Park, CA; Darren (Robin) Lyda, Kalispell, MT; Cynthia (Derak) Hextell, Sacramento, CA; Suzanne (Jeremy) Mason, Seattle, WA; Janice (Josh) Kilgus, Gig Harbor, WA; Sheila Scott, Portland, OR; and Doug (Anne) Scott of Marysville, WA; great grandchildren, Matthew and Aaron Carlton, Dylan, Alex and Zach Kilgus, Chelsea and Austin Scott, Noelle Mason and Dallas Hextell. Rachel s;so leaves a sister Peggy (Steve) Floreck of Canby,OR and a brother Bill Richey of Longview, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of special friends. Two sisters, Neta Volk of Ceres, CA, and Ruth Weber of Longview preceded her in death. Special thanks to the girls from Heron House, Dr. Timothy Jessick, the staff at Peace Health, and Community Home Health & Hospice for their loving care to Rachel. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to contribute to Hospice or the Heather Rider Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Fibre Federal Credit Union, PO Box 1786, Longview, WA 98632, in Rachel's name. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1 PM with Rev. Tom Ming officiating at Calvary Baptist Church, 1148 11th Ave, Longview. Arrangements are under the direction of Columbia Funeral Service.
