Dugaw died February 9 in Olympia, Washington leaving an impressive legacy of service to God, his fellow man, his country and his family. Dr. Dugaw was born on July 21, 1923 to Joseph A. and Blanche Dugaw in Chehalis, Wa. He attended St. Joseph Grade School and graduated from W.F. West High School in 1940. He attended the University of Portland, served in the army during World War II and graduated from the Marquette University School of Medicine in 1947. In June of 1947 he married the love of his life, Donna Lund of Eau Claire, Wisconsin with whom he shared the remainder of his life. Following his internship at Providence Hospital in Seattle, he began practicing medicine in Winlock and Toledo, where he served those communities from 1948 until his retirement in 1984. Since 1984, he and Donna have resided outside of Olympia on Eld Inlet. Besides Donna he is survived by his children and their spouses; Dianne Dugaw, PhD, of Eugene, OR (Amanda Powell); Catherine Goodman, Sacramento, CA (Bob); Kristine McDonald of Scarborough, Ontario, Canada (Alan); Daniel Dugaw, D.O., Olympia, WA; Teresa Anders, ARNP, Olympia (Craig); Paul Dugaw, J.D., Chehalis, WA (Marie); Mary Jo Dugaw Ketter, Falls City, WA (David); Elizabeth Pillers MEd, Shorewood, Ill., (Larry); Anne Dugaw, MA, Costa Mesa, CA, (Darius Sarrafi); Matthew Dugaw, Arlington, TX; Michael Dugaw, Kent, WA; Timothy Dugaw, Seattle, WA (Phillipa); as well as sixteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. Dr. Dugaw was devoted to the service of God and was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Toledo, WA and later St. Michael Parish in Olympia. He was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis and lived his life as an instrument of peace in accord with the prayer of St. Francis. He was a tireless contributor to his faith communities and served God in all he did. He was a member of the American Academy of Family Practice, Washington State Medical Association, the Lewis County Medical Association of which he was the former President and longstanding secretary-treasurer, and the Thurston-Mason County Medical Association. He also served as the Chief of Staff of St. Helens hospital. He served the medical needs of the greater part of Lewis County for thirty-six years. In the 1950s, he was a member of the National Guard achieving the rank of Major. He delivered a substantial portion of the population of Lewis County, took care of countless sick children, administered free physicals to the athletes of Toledo and Winlock High Schools, made house-calls to home- bound patients and comforted the dying and their families. After leaving Toledo he worked at the Westcare medical clinic in Olympia and provided to the medical needs of prisoners at the Thurston and Lewis county jails. He loved his community and was a member of the Toledo Lions Club, the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. He had a number of starring roles in community plays, the most memorable being as Count Dracula in the comedic musical "Dracula Baby." He coached Little League, Babe Ruth, and Toledo Girl's Fast pitch. Dr. Dugaw was known for his strength of character, honesty, sense of humor, love of his family and community, compassion, service, and hard work. His booming voice could be recognized by anyone within miles. He never took himself, or anyone else for that matter, too seriously. He loved the pursuit of knowledge and was an expert on history, specializing in the study of the Civil War. He water-skied, cross-country skied, gardened, golfed with his sons, and enjoyed fishing with his friends. Most importantly to him, he loved his family. He instilled in his children the love of God, the importance of the pursuit of knowledge, and the value of service to the community. His overriding goal in life was to make this part of the planet a better place because he was here. He did so A celebration of Dr. Dugaw's life will be held on Friday, February 17, 12:00 p.m., at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 1021 Boundary SE, Olympia, WA. There will be a rosary at 11:00 a.m. before the funeral mass.
