He was born October 19, 1914 in Lentz, Oregon, the son of John L. and Harriet B. (Minsinger) Fowler. He lived in the local area for 85 years, coming from Lentz. John attended The School in Shanghai (now known as Rose Valley) through the 8th grade. He married Elenore L. Grob August 21, 1948 in Yuma, Arizona – "Ellie" as he called her. After 51 years together, she preceded in him death on December 18, 1999. His daughter, Janet Fowler, also preceded him in death. John was a crane operator for Weyerhaeuser until he retired after 16 years. He joined the Navy in 1941 serving in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and retired in 1962 after 21 years of service. His memberships include the VFW Kelso Post #3017 and Weyerhaeuser Tree Farm Family. John was a family man and he enjoyed gatherings and holidays with good food, laughter & singing. His banjo playing was at the center of every occasion. He enjoyed playing for family and friends, and especially playing on holidays as his children & grandchildren gathered around him. He loved his tree farm and hard work. Every year he planted a garden with plenty for all. He was a good provider and a wonderful father. He enjoyed telling family history as well as stories of growing up in Rose Valley. He had a true love for God, Family & Country. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Harriet and Charles Speed of Kelso, Beth and James Speed of Longview; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Jennifer Fowler III, Daniel and Debra Fowler, all of Kelso; Timothy and Sherilyn Fowler of Kelso, 17 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren. A service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 3, 2005 at New Life Fellowship Church of God with Pastor Donald McDonald officiating. Columbia Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
