She was born July 15, 1916, in Eagle City, OK. She moved, as a young girl, to Albany, OR with her family of four brothers, whom she raised after her mother's early death. She married Harold E. Gilkey, and Oregon State Honors graduate, starting his teaching career in Grandview, WA, and then moving to Longview, WA where taught for 37 years the vocational agriculture program at R.A. Long High School. Josephine's many talents (such as 4-H Club leader) and dedication to raising a family, engaged her in productive farm life - the joy of hard work and love - she was a quiet woman of giving. Particularly throughout the 20 years since Harold' death in 1986, she was admired by her friends for her colorful landscaping and precious personality at her residence in Centralia, WA. The most-beloved mother is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lorene and Kurt Lechner of Woodinville, WA; and sons John of Vancouver, WA; Thomas of Akron, OH; and Douglas of Centralia, WA. She has five adult grandchildren: Krystal, Steven, Anna-Maria, Harold and Rhonna. She has one great grandchild, Ashley. Also surviving are her brother and sister-in-law, Homer (Jake) and Corlyss McCullough of Springfield, OR; sister-in-law Violet McCullough of Ellensberg, WA; sister-in-law Grace Dawson of Bothell, WA; and cousin Leona Schrock of Albany, OR. She is preceded in passing by her brothers Keith, Ray and Frank McCullough. Graveside services will be held at Longview Memorial Park Cemetery at 1 pm on Thursday, April 20. Services are under the direction of Cattermole Funeral Home in Winlock.
