Ralph Edmond Glading, 93, who had lived on the Harbor since 1996, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at Pacific Care Center in Hoquiam. He was born March 16, 1912 in Lorain, Ohio to Carl and Anna (Strubel) Glading. He graduated from Lorain High School and Oberlin College, then received a doctorate of paper technology from the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, Wis. He was hired by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company in Luke, Maryland. In early 1944 he went to work for A. B. Dick Company in Chicago, Ill. He had articles published in Chemical Abstracts magazine. In 1962 he was hired by Weyerhaeuser in Longview to work in their research and development department. He retired from Weyco in 1975 and continued to work as a consultant for them for several years. On Dec. 18, 1939 he and Thelma Mae Redden eloped in Russel, Ky. In the mid 1950s they organized the Little Squares square dance club and Gay Ginghams, a round dance group in the Chicago area. After moving to Washington, they took up rock hounding, playing bridge, ballroom dancing and traveling with friends. Ralph continued to call and teach square dancing, inviting many of his children's friends over for lessons in do-si-doing and "swing your partner." To this day, many of the "younger folks" remember learning to dance to "Blame it on the Bossa Nova" in the Glading's basement. Ralph and Thelma were active members of the Longview Community Church for over 30 years, Ralph serving as treasurer for much of that time. After Thelma died in 1991, Ralph stayed on in the family home in Longview for another five years. In 1996 he moved to Channel Point in Hoquiam to be closer to his daughter and her family. He enjoyed sharing his love of reading and was often found in the parlor at Channel Point reading to a room full of folks. Ralph's family is very grateful to the staff at Channel Point, Westhaven Villa and Pacific Care Center for the excellent care and loving kindness they showed him. He is survived by his son, Keith and his wife Kathy of Indianapolis, Ind., his daughter Karen Barkstrom and her husband Mike of Aberdeen, and grandchildren, Tara Walls of Black Diamond, Tyler Barkstrom of Everett and Tami Barkstrom of Aberdeen.
