Sylvia Haapala, 93, of Centralia died March 22, 2006. 

She was born Dec. 26, 1912, in Telluride, Colo., to John and Liisa (Wuorenmaa) 
Berlin. The family moved to Toledo in 1916. She graduated from Toledo High 
School in 1930 and from Washington State University in 1938 with degrees in 
home economics and education. 

Mrs. Haapala taught five years at Toledo High School and 25 years at Winlock 
High School. 

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Onni Haapala, in 1984 after 44 
years of marriage. She remarried on Nov. 2, 1996, to Cecil DeBriae. He preceded 
her in August 1999. 

Survivors include three nieces, Mildred Messick, Nancy Newell and Faye 
Germunson; and three nephews, Homer Knab, Arnold Knab and John Berlin. 

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cattermole Funeral Home 
chapel. The viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral 
home.
