She was born on September 9, 1929 in Kelso, Washington to Roy and March Modrow. Raised in Kalama, she enjoyed endless summer days swimming in the Kalama River with brother, Ronnie and cousin, Gene McIvor. She loved to get up early in the morning to help grandparents, Dave and Mary Modrow with chores on the farm. As a teenager, Shirley liked helping her Auntie Iris McIvor and Auntie June Schock at their café in Kalama. Shirley married Fred Hooper on March 5, 1948 and began a life as homemaker and mother to seven daughters that she referred to as her beautiful bouquet of flowers. She loved to spend time in her kitchen preparing wonderful meals for her family. A favorite was her homemade hamburgers cooked in her cast iron skillet. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed tole painting, ceramics, coloring, gardening, music, clam digging and salmon fishing where she took claim as being the only person who could net a salmon for her husband Fred…she had it down! She and Fred would spend many August and September evenings packing cucumbers from their garden into jars, adding all the special ingredients and creating the world's greatest homemade pickles. Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Fred; daughters and sons- in-law, Jerry and Sherry Stein, Karen Kennedy, Jackie Browne, Mark and Kathy Neuman, Diane Chinchen, Vincent and Susie Narios and Janet Simmons. Grandchildren include Shelly Sparks, Shawn Sparks, Jeremy and Kami Hooper, Josh and Simona Kennedy, Casey Kennedy, Geoff and Roxana Bohannon, Angela Browne, Chad and Holly Cooper, Amy Neuman, Ryan and Kindra Chinchen, Derek and Iva Chinchen, Jazlan Grigsby, Adena Gregsby, Vinnie Narios and Chris Smith. Great grandchildren include Josh and Garret Sparks, Cody Hooper, Mykella Kennedy, Jayden De La Cruz; Morgan, Conner, Erin and Peyton Bohannon; Taylor, Chelsea, Rylea, Devyn and Austin Thomasson; and Jordyn Cooper and Paige Chinchen. Other survivors include brother, Ron Modrow, a half brother, Roy Modrow, two half-sisters, Susie Russell and Judy Sager, her stepmother, Dolly Modrow, a very special aunt, June Schock and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A graveside service was held on May 20, 2006 at Bunker Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kelso Public Library, 314 Academy Street, Kelso, WA 98626.
