J. Stepp steppmom5@hotmail.com June 10, 2006, 10:36 pm Published in The Daily News on 6/8/2006. www.tdn.com/obits Roy Stone Huffman died on June 4, at the age of 83. He was born in Washington DC on March 27, 1923, and was the only son of Ray and Ada Huffman who had four children, three daughters and Roy, the youngest. Roy married his wife Betty in 1944; they permanently settled in Longview in 1980. As a youngster living in the Washington DC suburb of Chevy Chase, Maryland, Roy was a member of Rob, Roy, and Richard, an acrobatic team that once performed at the Cincinnati Hippodrome. He graduated from Bethany–Chevy Chase High School in June 1940, and then worked as a bank teller before enlisting in the United States Army Air Force in 1942. After flying 30 combat missions over occupied Europe during World War II as a first pilot of four engine B-17 bombers, the "flying fortress," he returned to the States where he served as an instrument pilot instructor, training American and French pilots. During the Cold War, Roy was a Command Pilot of the first jet bomber, the B-47 stratojet. Major Roy Huffman retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1962, ending a twenty year military career. In June 1960, Roy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in History from Bethany College in Lindsburg, Kansas. Then, in 1965, a few years after moving west with his growing family, he received a Master of Science Degree in Library Sciences, cum laude, from the University of Oregon. Attaining this degree reflected his passion for books and set the stage for his move to Longview and the next phase of his professional life. Having already begun his second career as librarian at Mark Morris High School, Roy moved Betty and their five children to Longview in 1966. Subsequently, in 1967, the couple purchased property in Columbia County, Oregon, and built the home they would live in until 1980, when they returned to Longview. Roy served the community of Longview as Mark Morris' librarian until his retirement in June 1982. Roy will be remembered by his family and friends as a man of honor, and one who demonstrated great humility, integrity, and unbridled generosity towards those fortunate enough to have known him. He will be missed so very much by Betty and his five children, Brian, George, Jon, Shirley Anne, and Jeffrey. So too will be missed by his seven grand children, and four great-grand children. Roy will be remembered dearly by his three surviving sisters, Lois, Virginia and Lee. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Columbia Funeral Services of Longview. A full honors military inurnment will take place at 12:00 p.m., at the Willamette National Cemetery, Clackamas, Oregon on Friday, June 9. If desired, monetary contributions in Roy's name can be made to the Longview Hospice Care Center.
