Longtime Woodland resident Leslie Elmer Hummels passed away in Vancouver, Washington on Sunday, October 30, 2005. He was born November 20, 1924 to William T. and Margaret Reilley Hummels in Hildreth, Nebraska. The Hummels family moved to Gaston, Oregon where Mr. Hummels graduated from high school. During World War II, he served aboard the USS Harrison in the United States Navy. After the war, his family moved to Woodland, where he met and married Lucille Ann Turpin in 1948. With his father, Bill, and brother, Hank, Les owned Hummels' Union 76 Station in Woodland from 1947 to 1971. He worked for several more years at Lewis River Motors, retiring in 1987. He then returned to the life of a farmer on the Hummels' property along the Lewis River. For many years, he was an active member of Woodland Presbyterian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Lions Club. Mr. Hummels was preceded in death by his parents, sister Louise Stackpole and brother Billy Hummels. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Lucille, and his children: Gene Hummels of Vancouver, Dr. Dean Hummels of Camas, Merry Jensen of Sammamish, Wash., Ann Allen of Woodland, and Carrie Zommers of Vancouver. Les delighted in his grandchildren Cameron and Allison Hummels, Hillary and Tel Jensen, Erin Hummels, William Hummels, Zachary and Ashley Zommers. Daughters-in- law Jill and Gretchen Hummels and sons-in-law Grant Jensen and Scott Zommers also loved him and were loved by him. In addition, he is survived by a brother, Henry 'Hank' Hummels of Vancouver, sisters Madelyn Heesacker of Gaston, Gwen Pellham of Rainier, Oregon, and Geri Stark of Woodland and sister-in-law Estle Hummels of Forest Grove, Oregon. Uncle Les to scores of nieces, nephews, and others, Les was loved by all and will be missed greatly. A memorial service in celebration of Mr. Hummels' life will be held Thursday, November 3, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Woodland Presbyterian Church, 756 Park St., Woodland. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in Les Hummels' memory to Ray Hickey Hospice House, 2112 E.
