Maxine was born in Woodland, WA on July 14, 1927 to Edgar and Cora Wilson Robbins. She spent her childhood in Cougar, WA which her grandparents had homesteaded. Her summers were spent at Lake Merrill, WA where her grandparents and parents operated a summer lodge. At age 14 Maxine moved to Woodland, WA to attend high school. She worked as a babysitter, housekeeper and waitress to put herself thru school. Maxine graduated from Woodland H.S. in 1945. She stayed in contact with many of her school friends until her death. Maxine's career spanned many years as a waitress having worked at the Totem Pole, The Quay and Bill's Chicken Inn restaurants in Vancouver, WA. Maxine married Donald Kelland in 1980. Their life together was spent fishing, clamming and traveling. Some of their favorite places being Baja Mexico, Desert Hot Springs CA, the Oregon and Washington coasts and mountain lakes. Maxine lived with her husband in their home on the Columbia River, where they fished and entertained. She was able to watch the ships pass their home on the river until her death. Maxine was an avid games player. All family members were encouraged to learn and play card, board and domino games. She loved her weekly bridge and pinochle card games which she played with her many friends. She was able to play her card games several times a week until shortly before her death. Maxine enjoyed the outdoors. She especially liked fishing, clam digging, huckleberry picking, flower and vegetable gardening, and walking on the beach. Her favorite annual trip was to the Oregon Coast with her daughter Karen and granddaughter Christi. Maxine belonged to the Woodland Presbyterian Church and volunteered at the Hulda Klager Lilac gardens for many years, as her mother Cora had done. Maxine is survived by her husband Donald Kelland of Woodland, WA, her daughter Karen L. Ruge DuClercque of Kamiah, ID and her son Douglas A. Ruge of Vancouver, WA. Her loving grandchildren are Troy A. Robinson of Lewiston, ID, Christi L. Robinson Chase of Lewiston, ID, and Kevin L. Ruge of Vancouver, WA. She also has two great grandchildren, Carson and Nash Ruge of Vancouver, WA. Maxine is also survived by her sister Donna Robbins Adams of Dallas, TX and her brother Richard E. Robbins of Cougar, WA. Maxine's family and friends will miss her vivacious energy and high spirits. She has been a great inspiration of strength to all who knew her in her 7 year battle with ovarian cancer. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Maxine's adventurous and joyous life on Friday, May 5, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Woodland Presbyterian Church in Woodland, WA.
