Bill was born in Newport, Idaho, on November 9, 1922, to Harold and Iva Anderson Kessler. His family moved to the Toutle area when Bill was 14, where he lived most of his life. He married Bernita Tippery on November 15, 1941. Bernita, his wife of 65 years, four sons, and a daughter survive him. They were blessed with six children. Leon and Mary Kessler, Robert and Laura Kessler, David and Georgia Kessler, Gary and Sandy Kessler and Linda and Steve Smith all live in the area. Bill and Bernita have 14 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by their firstborn, William, who died as an infant, a grandchild, Shane Smith, and younger brother, Gene Kessler. An older brother, Jerry, resides in Frederick, Maryland. Bill's youth was filled with mischief, a trait that followed him throughout his life. When he wasn't conjuring up a prank, he kept busy honing his skills at story and joke telling. An avid fisherman, he was as happy catching bluegill as he was steelhead. He was an accomplished singer and guitar player and often played music with his family. An avid sports fan, his favorite teams were the Toutle Lake Fighting Ducks and the Seattle Mariners. Bill was never without employment and held several diverse jobs, but logging was his favorite. Among his other jobs were timber cruiser, surveyor, salesman, and after retirement, groundskeeper for the Silver Lake Cemetery. Among his fondest memories and the source of many stories were the years he and Bernita spent on Wolf Point Lookout during WWII, spotting combat planes and watching for forest fires. His life brought love to his family and laughter to many. A memorial service will be held at the Castle Rock Christian Church on Monday, April 25, at 1 p.m. Following the service, a potluck gathering will be held at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632. Arrangements are under the direction of Hubbard Funeral Home.
