He was born Jan. 8, 1922 in the Friesland province of The Netherlands, to Johannes and Griet Klein. He lived in the Longview area for almost 40 years. He was educated in The Netherlands and, working with the Dutch Underground, created false passports to spirit Jewish expatriates to safety during the German occupation. Mr Klein, a civil engineer, was Kelso's Director of Public Works. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Klein; two adult children from a previous marriage, Karl William Klein and Linda Klein Breen; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Patti Palmer, Janice Weston, and Steve Rees; six step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Green Hills Cemetery. Following that, friends and family are invited to the Monticello Hotel (Fireside Room) at 12:15 p.m. with food and refreshments provided.
