He was born in The Netherlands, province of Friesland, to Johannes and Griet Klein. He had been a resident of the Longview area for almost forty years. Sid Klein was a civil engineer, and served as the Director of Public Works for the city of Kelso. He was educated in the Netherlands and served with the Dutch Underground during the German occupation from 1940 - 1945. He was very skilled at creating false passports which were used by the underground to move Jewish expatriates to safety. Sybren was generally called Sid by his close friends and compatriots. Sid was an avid golfer and loved to meet his buddies for coffee and to talk about the "good old days". He was also very kind hearted and generous, having done volunteer work assisting the elderly with grocery shopping. Sid was an accomplished craftsman having done many top quality renovations and additions to homes he owned, as well as assisting others with their home projects. He is survived by his wife Marguerite Klein, two adult children from a previous marriage, Karl William Klein and Linda Klein Breen, six grandchildren; Michael, Alicia, Jason, Garrick, Lisa and Kyle, and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by three step children, Patti Palmer, Janice Weston, and Steve Rees, six step grandchildren; Shana, Emily, John, Shawn, Kelsi and Caitlin and two step great grandchildren. Sid will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Sid will be memorialized at Green Hills Cemetery on Saturday, January 21st at 11:00 a.m. Following the memorial service friends and family are invited to a gathering at the Monticello Hotel (Fireside Room) at 12:15 p.m. Food and refreshments will be provided.
