He was born in Lindy, Nebraska on July 6, 1926 to Fritz and Sophia Klein. He was raised on the family farm in Bloomfield, Nebraska where he attended school through the eighth grade. Herb served in the Army and toured in the Philippines during WWII. In 1947, he moved west to Lindberg, OR where he lived with his brother and sister-in-law Fred and Hilma Klein. Herb soon met the neighbor girl and "LOVE OF HIS LIFE", Iris Caldwell. They married on September 3, 1949 in Rainier, OR. Herb worked for Smith Tugboats until the birth of their first son. They moved to the Alston Corner Area of Rainier in 1953, where Herb and their boys raised Black Angus cattle, hayed for all of the neighbors and raised strawberries. Herb worked for the Weyerhaeuser Shipping Department in Longview, WA as a Forklift Operator, loading lumber trucks from 1954 through 1987. He retired with 33 years of service. Herb did many volunteer services in his lifetime. They included being a volunteer firefighter at the Delena Fire Station, President of the Delena School Board, member of the Columbia River Chapter of the VFW post #1909, and served on the Board for the Clatskanie Fire Department. Herb would take vacation just to watch his boys show Black Angus cattle at the county and state fairs. He lived his life with a work ethic that he passed down through the generations. He kept a meticulous home, yard and barn. In addition to his wife of 56 years, Iris Klein, he is survived by his youngest son and family, Jeff and Kelly Klein and two grandchildren Cody Blakley and Abby Klein, all of Kelso, WA. He was preceded in death by their two sons, Timothy James Klein in April of 1979 and David Orval Klein in April of 1996. Herb is survived by his sister-in-law, Hilma Klein of Ocean Park, WA; two brothers and sister-in-laws, Art & Thressia Klein of Moville, Iowa; Elmer & Mike Klein of Bloomfield, Nebraska; and a sister, Elaine Peitzmeier of Papillion, Nebraska. His brothers, Fred, Ray and Glenn Klein, and a sister, Megdalena Ermels preceded him in death. There will be a viewing on Wednesday, April 26th from 1-5 p.m. and a Funeral Service on Thursday, April 27th at 1:00p.m. at Haakinson-Groulx Mortuary in Clatskanie, OR. There will be a graveside service at Green Mt. Cemetery in Rainier, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Herbert's name to Community Home Health & Hospice, P.O.
