He was born on June 23, 1912 in Maywood, IL. He lived the model American life blessed with opportunity and surrounded by loving family and friends. He was born to Charles A. and Lydia B. Korten and had two brothers Ted and Chuck, all of whom preceded him in death. In Chicago, his family owned Korten Brothers Coffee and Hotel Supply Company, a coffee and hotel supply business. In 1927, Ralph, then 14, and his family moved to Spokane, WA. Later they moved to the Longview-Kelso area where Ralph's father purchased Cooper Music of Kelso. He renamed it "Korten's Music Store", which, for seventy-three years claimed "Music Brings Happiness". It was one of Longview's first big original stores; the last to close its doors and Ralph spent most of his working life there. Ralph graduated from RA Long High School in 1930. While visiting in Chicago, he met Irene, the oldest of three Czechoslovakian sisters, whom he married in 1939. After 56 years of marriage, he lost Irene in 1995. Ralph was community oriented and joined the Longview Rotary Club in 1952. He continued his membership throughout his life, becoming a 50-Year Member at the age of 90. Ralph moved to Everett, WA where he lived for the last three years. All who knew Ralph and Irene knew of their love of their family. Ralph is survived by three sons: Doug (and Sandy) of Saratoga, CA; Phil of Milwaukie, OR and Tom (and Susan) of Everett, WA. His grandchildren: Justine Snyder of Union KY, Dr. Amy Korten of Kirkland WA, Kim Korten of Dunbar W. VA, Kelly Forsythe of Everett WA and Elise Korten of Milwaukie OR. When asked about his great grandkids, with great pride he would tell you about Cole, Cade, Mikey, Rylie and Katelyn. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Ralph's life at 1pm Saturday November 19th at the First Christian Church, 2000 E Kessler Blvd Longview, WA. A reception will follow the services.
