Wayne Mann, born in Tacoma and a lifelong Washington state native and powerboat lover, sailed to new waters Wednesday, December 14, 2005. He was born to Ernest Wayne Mann, Sr., and Ingrid (Hollingen) Mann on May 14, 1925. A graduate of Stadium High School and the College of Puget Sound (now UPS) with a master's in education from the University of Oregon, Wayne was an innovative and passionate educator and coach. He began his education career at Toutle Lake, later moving to R.A. Long High School in Longview, then later became vice principal and retiring as principal at Mark Morris High School, also in Longview. Overall, he served 24 years in the Longview school district. In retirement, he served as a leader for more than 20 years of the Washington State Teachers Retirement Association. He was well known in Olympia as a highly knowledgeable, respected and fair advocate for better benefits for teachers. In 1998, he helped lead successful passage of Gain Sharing benefits for retired teachers. Wayne was an eternal optimist and fighter for the underdog. While at Mark Morris High School, he initiated several cutting edge programs that exist today. They included those to help pregnant teenage students obtain their diplomas and the mainstreaming of disabled and mentally challenged students, where he involved student athletes in helping ensure the classroom acceptance of the kids he sought to help. Both programs were highly successful, as was a program to work with dropouts and potential dropouts. Wayne was an excellent basketball player and track athlete. He held the College of Puget Sound's high jump record for 25 years, medaled in that event at the Caledonian Games in Canada for Olympic hopefuls and was captain of the Stadium High School track team. He played basketball for Stadium High and the University of Washington. He enjoyed attending the Pierce County "old jocks" meetings and following University of Washington athletics, where he was a 25-year Husky football season ticket holder. He was also president of Kappa Sigma fraternity at CPS. Wayne loved his grandkids, Evan Mann and Olivia DeVries of Bellingham and Sam and Elle Walters of Tacoma. He was a member of Tacoma Elks Lodge #174, and a long-time member of Rotary International and the Longview Country Club. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Donna Mann (Thompson), also a Tacoma native. He is survived by his son, Mike Mann (Johanna DeVries) of Bellingham; and daughter, Wendy Mann Walters (Mike) of Tacoma; and sister, Marilyn (Ed) Wozeniak of Bellevue. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Mark Morris High School's Wayne Mann Special Education Life Skills Memorial Fund. A celebration of Wayne's life will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at Tuell-McKee Funeral Home in Tacoma.
