She was born October 7, 1908 in Kansas City, Kansas, daughter to William Baber and Eliza Sullivan Baber. She is preceded in death by two husbands, Howard Lee (1900-1959) and James E. Marentette (1907-1992), a son and three brothers. Mattie is survived by her two children Marcella J. Darvell of Longview, WA and Arnold R. Lee of Ryderwood, WA, also Mattie's two step-daughters, Joyce Chisholm of Longview, WA and Patsy Meyers of Toutle, WA. Mattie had eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She loved each and every one very much. Her joy was her family. Her hobbies most enjoyed were sewing, crocheting, and bowling. Mattie was lively, good hearted and a bit feisty of a woman. Many who knew her, loved her. Mattie and her husband Jim took several cruise trips and train trips, making lots of new friends. She also enjoyed her membership at the Eagles Auxiliary #2116 where she had made some warm local friendships. During Mattie's extensive life she was Cowlitz County's first woman meter reader. She applied for a temporary job in 1941 with PUD for war replacement, expecting the gentleman to return to his job after the war. Mattie had proved her worth over those years and they kept her on for 30 more years until she retired. Mattie's full life has given her so much; a career, a loving family, wonderful friends, and nearly 100 years of history and changes. She will be missed. Due to her wishes, there will be no services. She will be interned at Longview Memorial Park. Memorial contributions can be made in the name of Mattie Marentette to Community Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632.
