She had had a mild heart attack the end of the year and again in the hospital last week. She was born on September 16, 1909 in Payne County (Perkins), Oklahoma. She lived in Kelso from 1943 to 1953. A widow, Fern worked hard in operations in restaurants, as a nurse's aide and a housewife and a real estate investor. Her late husband, Clyde Mask, retired from International Paper in the 1950's. Fern was involved in her church and enjoyed helping in the kitchen with the pancake breakfasts. Her family praised her cooking, "She was the best cook...happiest feeding you". She played piano for a non-profit singing group known as the "Beach Notes" in Lincoln City, Oregon. She crocheted anything from string to plastic grocery sacks into doilies and rugs. She was living on her own in a retirement complex on the coast. She is survived by her children: Juanito Olivo and Joyce Johnson, both of Lincoln City, Oregon; Marvin Mask of Phoenix, Arizona; 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sons, Jim and Glendale Mask, both were from Kelso, WA.
