The son of Charles and Henrietta Washer Ostervold, he was born at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland on December 15, 1922. He moved to Puget Island on Valentine's Day 1938 to his grandparent's farm where he helped his father with the dairy. Lloyd attended Wahkiakum High School. On December 7, 1941, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he quit school and joined the Navy where he served as a member of the Armed Guard Division as an anti-aircraft gunner from 1942 through 1945. Lloyd's travels during World War II took him throughout the South Pacific and all over the world where he made friendships that would last a lifetime on the ships the Samuel Huntington, the Louis Joliet, the Samuel K Barlow for two trips, and the Canada Victory. After the war, Lloyd returned to Wahkiakum High School and earned his G.E.D. He purchased 40 acres from his uncle, John Ostervold and began to develop his own farm. Lloyd had a variety of jobs including driving milk truck and working at the Columbia-Hudson mill at Bradwood, where he became a staunch union supporter and was voted president. In later years Lloyd served as a night foreman. After the mill went down, he farmed and was one of the first five hired at the new Wauna Mill. Here again, he was elected president of the union, the IBPS & PMW Local #540. As an adjuster, Lloyd helped install the original machines in the converting department. During his employment at Wauna, he worked as an adjuster, a head adjuster, and later as a wood chip tester. He retired in 1987 after 22 years of service. In 1959, Lloyd saw Jacquelyn Greenough at a high school football game and was determined to marry her. In 1960, he did just that. Their family grew with five children, including four daughters and one son. During retirement, Lloyd served Girl Scout Service Unit #40 as product sales manager for nine years. He received an Appreciation Award given by Pacific Peaks Girl Scout Council in 1996. Lloyd loved to use his Girl Scout membership card for ID purposes. Another volunteer activity Lloyd enjoyed was his work with the Red Cross. He especially enjoyed working at the local blood drawings, but was also involved in some disaster response in the local community. Over his lifetime, Lloyd donated fourteen gallons and three pints of blood to the Red Cross. Lloyd enjoyed his family, hunting, fishing, traveling to his cabin on the Blackfoot River in Montana, and the love of his faithful puppy, Tootsie Pup. Lloyd was a life member of the VFW. He was also a devout lifetime member of the Catholic Church. In 2003, Lloyd wrote a book, Boot Camp and Beyond, to pass along to his family and friends a record of what he did and saw during World War II, as a member of the United States Naval Guard. He was in the process of writing a book about growing up in Portland during the Depression. He was a Wahkiakum Cemetery District #1 Board member for 24 years and was several years on the Wahkiakum Fair Board. Lloyd was "Santa" at Christmas time for several local organizations and preschools for many years. He is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn; his daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Randy Hansen, Valerie and Joel Shepler, Dr. Kathryn-Kari and Gale Stephens, and Margaret Ostervold and Jeff Buck; son, Charles "Chip" Ostervold, III; grandchildren, Gretchen and Courtney Rudat; Nick, Alex and Heidi Hansen; Cody, Camille, Mackenzie and Catherine Shepler; Matthias Ostervold; and one more granddaughter is expected in October.
