Palmer, 79, passed away peacefully at the Hospice Care Center, October 27, 2005. A celebration of life for Bernice B. Palmer will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 3, 2005 at Calvary Community Church (2655 38th Ave., Longview). Bernice was born in Reynolds, North Dakota, February 27, 1926. The youngest child of Andrew (Andreas) Bergly and Jorgine Olslind Bergly. She moved to Longview with her father in 1941, while her sister and three brothers were in the military. Bernice attended R.A. Long and graduated from Bernards Beauty College. In 1987 she received her GED from LCC. Strong family values and traditions, and her Norwegian full-blooded heritage were very important to her. On May 18, 1947 Bernice married Franklin A. Palmer, whom she met on a blind date. Their first home was in Longview, they also lived in Portland, Oregon for a short time where Frank worked for Safeway. Returning to Longview for several years, they then built a home in Kelso in 1962. Shortly after Franks passing Bernice moved to Canterbury Park. There she met up with several old friends, whom she dearly loved, and met several new ones. There were many fun filled trips to the beach and Hood Canal with all the family and friends. Other favorite travels would be to Canada, North Dakota, Arizona, Palm Springs, and to Disneyland for Mothers Day at the Disneyland Hotel. While at Disneyland she got to enjoy lots of shopping and every ride or adventure there with her family. Bernice worked for several years in her home beauty shop in Kelso. She also worked in Food Service at St. Johns after Frank retired. She retired from St. Johns after 12 years. She enjoyed caring for her family, was a loving mother and grandmother, a wonderful cook, and talented seamstress. Her smile and laugh was present all through her life, even while not feeling the best. Her sense of humor was present even during her final days, she had family and nurses laughing at times. Bernice had one special sister, Ellen B. Westin, and brothers, Harold Bergly and Kenneth Bergly. She is survived by her brother Alf Bergly of Yuma, Arizona. She is also survived by daughter Susan Chaufty and her husband Darrell Chaufty, daughter Teri Stone and her husband Nate Stone; son Gary Palmer and his wife Virginia Palmer; seven grandchildren, Kelly Gallagher, Kevin Chaufty, Kerry VanSkike and husband Travis VanSkike, Katie Wallace and husband Travis Wallace, Andy Stone, Ericka Palmer, and Scott Palmer; eight great-grandchildren, Nicholas Gallagher, Elijah and Irianna Tunney-Gallagher, Alexis and Ali Chaufty, Mitchell and Jonas VanSkike, and Cade Harren; brother-in-law, Milford Westin and sister-in-law Ethel Bergly; along with 10 nieces and one nephew. Her family would like to thank all her many friends for their cards (we read them all to her and she really enjoyed them) their visits, beautiful flowers, wonderful food, and caring words. We also want to thank Dr. Shaw, your kindness and caring for Bernice will never be forgotten. The nurses and staff at Hospice are truly the kindest, caring people on earth. Thank you so much for the loving care you gave Mom.
