Stepp steppmom5@hotmail.com April 11, 2006, 4:58 pm Published in The Daily News on 12/27/05 Grover Cleveland Phillips, 81, of Kelso, passed away December 22, 2005, at an adult care facility in Longview. He was born April 24, 1924, in Astoria, Oregon, to Girden and Irene (Diviny) Phillips, and moved to Kelso in 1929. He was a 1942 graduate of Kelso High School and attended Lower Columbia Junior College. Grover began a banking career in 1952 as a teller with Commercial Savings & Loan Association of Kelso, eventually becoming branch manager and corporate secretary. In 1965, Commercial merged with Lincoln Mutual Savings Bank, and in 1970, he was named as assistant vice president of Lincoln. He retired in 1986. Grover served as a gunner's mate in the United States Navy during World War II. He served as a Kelso city councilman from 1967 to 1973 and was mayor of Kelso from 1969 to 1973. He had served as board member of the Cowlitz County Fair, a trustee of both the Kelso Elks Lodge and Cowlitz County United Fund, secretary of the Kelso Rotary Club, and a member of the Kelso planning Commission. Survivors include his wife Barbara Phillips at home; son, Jerry Phillips of Kelso; daughter, Nancy Spiropulos of Twin Falls, Idaho; two brothers, Lucien Phillips of Kelso and Rodney Phillips of Mattawa; grandchildren, Greg and Nicholas Spiropulos of Boise, Idaho and Trevor and Corey Phillips of Kelso; and great granddaughter Kyra Spiropulos of Boise, Idaho. A funeral service will be held at Columbia Funeral Chapel, December 28, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert C. Giles officiating. Private mausoleum entombment will take place at Cowlitz View Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice Care Center at Box 2067, Longview, Washington 98632.
