He was born in Wadena County, MN on April 26, 1923. He married Irene Richards on March 10, 1944. DeWayne served in the Army from December of 1944 to April of 1946, where he was first stationed at Camp Roberts in California. He briefly visited Western Washington in 1944 before being shipped out of Seattle to serve in the South Pacific. In 1949, DeWayne decided to move his young family to Washington state, where he went to work in Longview at Long Bell for 3 years. He then switched jobs to Longview Fibre where he worked until 1960, at which time he and Irene went into business for themselves in Chehalis running "Rider's 24 Flavors". In 1967, DeWayne returned to Longview Fibre where he remained until his retirement in July of 1985. At that time he enjoyed traveling and spending the winters at his second home in sunny Arizona. He mostly lived in the Kelso, Kalama, Castle Rock, and Longview areas until his death. The love of his life was his wife and family. DeWayne was very much a family man and considered everyone he met to be family. He was especially close to his many nieces and nephews. He had an endless love affair with antique and classic cars, his favorite car probably being the Ford Model A. DeWayne leaves his wife of 62 years, Irene; son, Darwin (Barb); daughters, Derene Salzsieder (Karl), and Debbie Stalter (Kevin); 10 grandchildren; 4 great grandsons; 2 brothers, Ron and Marlin Rider; and 2 sisters, Mayvis Taskey and Karen James.
