Riley, 90, a long-time resident of Longview, quietly and peacefully shed her earthly bonds on April 21, 2006 with her children and son-in-law at her side, and went to join her husband, parents, and four siblings who preceded her in death. Muriel was born Muriel Elaine Fox on September 18, 1915, in Stonewall County, Texas on the Salt Fork of the Brazos River to Mose and Roxie Fox. She was born in a half dug out, which was a house dug partly into the side of a hill. Her father was a farmer who made syrup from sugar cane. Muriel had 5 sisters and two brothers. When she was 3 years old, the family moved from Stonewall County to Quanah, Texas, a distance of about 100 miles. They traveled to Quanah in a covered wagon. After living there a little over a year, they returned, again by covered wagon, to live on a farm in Stonewall County. Muriel's playmates were her brothers and sisters; tag and jumping rope were favorite games. At age 18 Muriel moved back to Quanah and became a housekeeper, earning $2.50 per week. The family lived next door to the Riley family and she met her future husband, D. C. Riley, at that time. They were married in December 1941. In 1947, they moved to Longview. Muriel became a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked in area nursing homes for many years. She was a long standing volunteer at the Red Cross, as well as a volunteer election worker. She and her husband were members of the First Christian Church in Longview. Muriel loved the springtime when the flowers were starting to grow, and she loved arranging flowers. Easter and Christmas were very special times for her. Muriel was a wonderful mother and grandmother. The many people who counted her as a friend were fortunate indeed. Muriel was known for her ability to always find the good in everyone. She will be missed by all! Surviving Muriel are her daughter, Marjorie Lebens and her husband, Jeff of Portland OR; her son, Dave Riley of Omaha NE; her sisters, Billie Harmon and Iris Fox of Sacramento CA; her brother, Olen Fox and his wife Juanita of Shelton, WA. Also surviving Muriel are 6 grandchildren: Amy (Riley) Paulson and husband Dean of Lakewood, WA, Elise (Lebens) South of Boise, ID, Amanda (Riley) Snyder and husband David of Kirkland, WA, Chris Lebens and wife Olivia of Moscow, ID, D. C. Riley and Cody Riley both of Bellevue, NE. In addition, Muriel had 3 great grandchildren: Zachary and Sydney Paulson of Lakewood, WA and Riley Snyder of Kirkland, WA as well as many nieces and nephews. Cremation is under the direction of Steele Funeral Home. A Memorial service will be held at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park on May 20, 2006 at 3:00 in the afternoon with an informal reception immediately following the service.
