Sauvola passed into the Lord's care on January 9th, 2006 at the age of 93 with her daughter at her side. She was born March 22nd, 1912 on Columbia Heights, Kelso WA to Jacob and Anna Mary Anttonen. She was the eldest of ten children. She helped her mother tending to the new babies as they came along. After her parents passed on, she became known as "Mama Kate" especially to her sisters. On Valentines Day 1936, she married Pentti Sauvola. He preceded her in death December 27th, 1993, as did a son Alan Jack at the age of 3 days on Dec 10, 1952. Preceding her in death are her parents and 5 brothers: Emil Anttonen, Arthur Anttonen, Anselm Anttonen and Eino Anttonen. Surviving her are: Daughter Minerva Shelby of Castle Rock. Four Grandsons and wives; Richard Shelby (Roberta), Randy Shelby (Eileen) of Woodland WA, Roy Shelby (Judy) of Helmer ID and Ryan Shelby (Cathy) of Meridian ID. Ten Great- Grandchildren; Lori Ripberger, Brandon Shelby, Tina Shelby, Matt Rasmussen, Luke Rasmussen, Bethany Boerste, Christopher Shelby, Crystal Benintendi, Adam Shelby and Megan Shelby. Nine Great-Great Grandchildren; Parker Benintendi, Kylee Surgeon, Laura, Thomas, Emily, Shelby, Jason Ripberger, Penny Martin and Emily Olin. Katherine was known for her smiles and generous hugs to which she shared with everyone. She will be greatly missed by her family as she was the center of all of our gatherings. Would like to take this time to thank; Dr. Mark Thorson and his staff for their long years of caring for her. A big thank you to the staff of the Evergreen Americana for the great care of Katherine and a special thank you for 3 of the aides (you know who you are), you made all the difference in her care, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Special thanks to Pastor Mike Shreve for his kind words, lovely service, and to the United Methodist Church in Kalama for the wonderful luncheon. You are truly an above and beyond group of women and men to help us through this time of sorrow, and many thanks for the flowers, cards, phone calls and food. It was greatly appreciated.
