Scharf, 98, passed away at his home May 31. He lived in Longview for 78 years. Mr. Scharf was born in Robbinsdale, Minnesota on January 20, 1908, the third child of Louis and Ella Scharf. He was raised in North Dakota where he attended public school, graduating in 1925 from Dickinson High School in Dickinson, North Dakota. In the late 1920s, he and a friend left Bismarck in a 1923 Model T Roadster. Ten days later they arrived in Junction City, Oregon. On June 11, 1928, after further education and work experiences, he arrived in Longview, where he worked at the Longview Fibre Company and Weyerhaeuser Timber Company. During the Depression he worked for Hawaiian Electric in Honolulu. On June 15, 1940, he married Margaret Ann Reisman of Longview and they raised three grateful children. He leaves a legacy of commitment to his family and friends and will be remembered for his hard work and dedication to family and community. He was a sports fan who loved golf, ocean fishing, and with his wife Ann, entertaining friends in the family cabin on the Toutle River. He started Scharf Electric in 1947 at 6th and Main in West Kelso where he remained in business until the early 1970s. He continued to manage his commercial properties well into his nineties. Mr. Scharf was elected to Public Office three times, once to the Board of Free Holders of P.U.D. and twice to the Longview City Council. He placed an extremely high value on formal education and lifelong learning. He studied advanced electricity all his life. He was a Mason for 50 plus years, a 32- degree Scottish Rite, and member of Afifi Shrine. He was a Veteran Member of the National Electrical Contractor's Association and at the time of his death held the oldest union card in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 970. Throughout his life he was dedicated to the well being of his family and committed to the support of his community. He was a member of many organizations and philanthropic groups. He, along with Truman Myklebust and Bruce Cooper founded the LCC Booster Club. He served as the club's third President. He was a long time member of Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He joined the Longview Country Club in the 1930s and served on the Board. Louie was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ann Scharf, who passed away in 2003. He was also preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Vernon Scharf; his sister, Sister Evelyn Norma Scharf; half brother, Robert Howard; and half sister, Edith Webb. He is survived by three children, son, Louis L. Scharf Jr. and wife, Carol of Ft. Collins, CO; daughter, Susan D. Black and husband, David of Snoqualmie Pass, WA; and son, Robert J. Scharf and wife, Laura of Bremerton, WA. He leaves 6 grandchildren, Greg Scharf and wife, Margaret; Heidi Donovan and husband, Sam; Jake Sudderth; Ann Miller and husband, Matt; Jessica Stevenson and husband, Matt; and Matt Scharf; three great-grandchildren, Nathalie and Max Scharf, and Caley Donovan; and a multitude of admiring friends and business associates. Louie expressed his wishes that the memorial be a private family ceremony. The family suggests that remembrances may take the form of donations to Hospice of Cowlitz County.
