Stepp steppmom5@hotmail.com June 3, 2006, 11:32 pm Published in The Daily News on 5/6/2006. www.tdn.com/obits Evelyn Dianne Scott, 71, a beloved Longview resident and longtime community volunteer, died May 4, 2006, at the Hospice Care Center. She was born June 30, 1934, in Vancouver, WA, to Emil and Violet Neiger, grew up in Fargher Lake, WA and was a 1952 graduate of Battle Ground High School. She met Roy D. Scott in January 1953 and they were married Oct. 16, 1953. They went on to have three children: Cheryl, Steven, and Carol Ann to whom Evelyn devoted her life along with her husband Roy. Evelyn always made sure that not only was the Scott family door open to their friends, but also her heart. Evelyn went to work in the engineer's office of the phone company soon after she and Roy wed, and later worked in the accounting office of Schneider's hardware for many years. Ev and Roy purchased Scharf Electric in 1973 and immediately merged with Cascade Electric where Evelyn went to work in their front office. In 1993, after 20 years, they sold their share of the company, retiring from business to pursue other interests. They then traveled regularly, enjoyed time with family and friends, golfed frequently, tended to their yard and flowers, and were active members of the country club. Evelyn volunteered countless hours in her lifetime to many charities: She was a Boy & Girl Scout leader for her children, an active Beta Rho Sorority member for 50 years serving several terms as president; a Toutle River Lake Guild member and past president including running the thrift shop and organizing various fundraising activities. She was a lifelong Bethany Lutheran Church member, treasurer, secretary, and volunteer. After being diagnosed with lung cancer last year, Evelyn felt the calling to volunteer at hospice in her final months and this was consistent with her actions of always putting others before herself. Throughout her lifetime, Evelyn was known for these and countless other selfless acts of kindness. Evelyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband Roy in 1999. She is survived by her children; a son, Steve Scott of Burien, WA; two daughters, Cheryl Roodman of Mercer Island, WA, and Carol Grojean of Mercer Island, WA; a sister-in-law, Evelyn "Cookie" Tobias of Longview; nine grandchildren; a nephew, and three nieces. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Longview where friends and family will have the opportunity to share a memory or favorite story about her. Everyone is welcome to join the family immediately following the service in the reception hall. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Home Health Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632. Arrangements are by Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park. Private interment will take place at Longview Memorial Park at a later date.
