The family moved to Kelso in 1929 after the early deaths of Horace Baldwin and youngest brother, Wallace due to Tuberculosis. Edwin enjoyed his time at Kelso High School. He distinguished himself as a formidable athlete playing football and basketball while maintaining high marks and an active social life. Friend and coach Walt Piper remembers Ed saying "If the school burned down tonight, I'd still show up tomorrow." In 1943, upon graduating from Kelso High School, he joined the U.S. Navy serving in the Pacific on the aircraft carrier USS White Planes until after the end of World War II. After earning an honorable discharge from the Navy, he was awarded a football scholarship to Eastern Washington State University. When taking the grandkids on a trip in the travel trailer, Grandpa Scott was well known for singing "On the Road Again" as they set out. In addition to their domestic travels, they enjoyed more exotic locations. These included Hawaii, Jamaica, The Bahamas, Belize, Guatemala, Rarotonga, and Tahiti. In 1954, Ed started what would be his life career when he began working at the Port of Longview as a longshoreman. Shortly after that he developed a taste for civic activism. He became active in the ILWU Local 21, holding elected leadership positions for most of his 32 year career including Gang Boss, Local President, Vice President and National Delegate. In 1955, he was awarded the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Labor Council Hall of Fame Award. In 1993, he won the Pete La Riviere Sr. Award for outstanding dedication and service from the Cowlitz Democratic Men's Club. In 1997, Ed was honored by the state Democratic Party with the Warren G. Magnuson Award. In 1975, he ran unsuccessfully for Port Commissioner. He also served the community as a volunteer at the help Food Warehouse where his and Helen's work won them both the Governors Award for Distinguished Volunteerism in 1983.
