Ralph was born Feb. 19, 1916 to Albert and Lura (Goodnow) Smith on a farm in Awonka, South Dakota. His family moved to Washington shortly thereafter. He grew up on farms along the Cowlitz and Lewis Rivers and also lived with his seven brothers and sisters in what is now Lexington. He graduated from Woodland High School. He married his high school sweetheart Myrtle I. Woods on December 16, 1937. Ralph worked for 37 years at Weyerhaeuser as a Machinist. All who met Ralph knew him for his tender heart and gracious spirit. He was an active member of First Christian Church in Longview for many years and served as an Elder for many of those years. He supported the young people of the church for over 30 years. His home was open to many young people who lived with him and Myrtle. In the 1970's he opened his home for a young adult Bible study group that drew young people from all over Southwest Washington. The youth group grew and eventually became what is now Shekinah Christian Center, where he has been a faithful supporter since it began in 1979. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Myrtle I. Smith; daughter, Lynette Hall of Clackamas, Oregon; two sons Karl R. Smith of Salem, Oregon, and Greg L. Smith of Longview, Washington; Daughters-in-law Grace Smith of Salem, Oregon and Margaret Smith of Longview, Washington; two sisters, Loretta Albertson and Carolyn Galaway of Vancouver, Washington. He has eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at Shekinah Christian Center, 1015 3rd Ave. Longview, WA.
