He was born September 8, 1925 to Peter and Marie (Brockmueller) Smith in Lincoln, Nebraska. His family lived in several South Dakota towns before moving to Puget Island in 1940. When he was 15 years of age, he helped his father on the home dairy and went to school at Cathlamet. From 1944 to 1946, he served in the Army with the 1777th Combat Engineers in the European Theater, in the Pacific, in the Philippines, and in Japan. Following military service, he worked for Crown Zellerbach as a log truck driver and hauling equipment. He worked for Standard Dairy for 8 years and Mayflowers farms for 12 years. He worked 11 years for the U.S. Forest Service at Hoodsport, Washington. He later returned to Longview, Washington. He worked for CAP for three years, caring for the elderly. He married Aune Tienhaara on June 19, 2004 in Las Vegas. She survives him at home. He was predeceased by a son, Michael Neil Smith; a sister, Ruth Holland of Cathlamet, WA; and two brothers, Jack and Bob Smith. He is survived by one sister, Florence Marcus of Eugene, Oregon. No service will be held. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements under the direction of Columbia Funeral Service.
